Jason Barney Charges To Win in ASCS Patriot Thriller at Canandaigua

CANANDAIGUA, NY (June 7, 2008)- Half way into the feature, Jason Barney was more than half a lap behind the leader, but without the aid of the caution he would charge through the pack to Patriot Win.

Barney, of Constantia, NY, scored his second career ASCS Patriot A-Main win on Saturday Night at the Canandaigua in yet another nail-biting feature at the 0x00bd-mile. He won last June for his first career win, but this one he was not expecting.

"I can't even explain it right now," said an elated Barney in Victory Lane. "We struggled all night long, we changed everything and it finally worked."

Barney took the lead from Bobby Breen on lap 22 while in heavy lapped traffic and held on the final three laps for the win.

"I wouldn't look at the lap counter until I got around Breen, because I figured he was out front," noted 'Racin Jason' about his uncertainty of his position on the track. "When I saw that '87' on the board I knew I just had to hold on."

The former modified standout started back in 10th place after a third place finish in his National Parts Peddler in his heat. He logged four crucial laps in the "Four Laps of Fame", which also proved to be beneficial for dash winner Bobby Breen and Chuck Hebing.

Barney found himself in seventh place when the races only caution came out on lap six for Mike Stelter and Jared Fink getting together. He would quickly charge into the top five but as the laps logged, Jared Zimbardi had put more than a 0x00bc mile on the Charles Tibbets Masonry/ Walton's Farm and Auto Repair No. 87*.

Zimbardi looked unbeatable in the early stages, but around lap 10 he broke a mount on his wing tree, drastically affecting the handling. His healthy advantage disintegrated quickly as Bobby Breen and first-time Patriot Competitor Dan Kaszubinski closed in.

Breen would work his way through the lapped traffic and capture the lead on lap 15 and seemed destined to win. But as the No. 9 caught new traffic, the bottom began to come in for Barney.

"Sometimes you come here and the track is tacky in the corners, tonight it was tacky only on the straights," noted Barney after the event. "We were able to get off the bottom good and that got us here."

Barney now takes the early lead in the A-Verdi Storage Containers King of Central New York Series Within a Series. Being the hard charger of the night, advancing nine spots, he also took the lead in the Walton's Farm and Auto Repair King of CNY Hard Charger Standings.

Bobby Breen was able to hold off Chuck Hebing for the runner-up position. Both drivers struggled in heat one and found themselves in the dash. That track time proved crucial as they quickly flew up through the pack. The top three in the that 9th-14th dash would end up being the top three in the feature.

Jared Zimbardi would fall to fourth after the wing tree troubles. It was the best finish of the year for the 2007 ASCS Patriot runner-up.

Bryan Howland was running second during the lap six caution when he recognized his Filtrec Corporation No. 51 had a flat right rear. The crew was able to rapidly make the swap and Bryan did the rest. The current point leader restarted in 19th and charged up to round out the top-five.

NPP Heat 2 Winner Doug Emery finished in sixth for the second straight race at "The Land of Legends", with Heat 1 winner Dan Kaszubinski fading to seventh. Three-time Canandaigua Winner George Suprick was eighth with Scott Kreutter ninth in his first start of the year in his own car. Heat 3 winner Don Adamczyk rounded out the top-10.

A strong field of 29 cars were on hand for the only visit for the Patriots to the Ontario County Fairgrounds in 2008. The 13 car B-Main was won by Mike Stelter of nearby Ontario, NY. For more information, please visit or
