Hebing Sweeps ASCS Patriots at Penn Can

SUSQUEHANNA, Penn. (July 21, 2006) -- Chuck Hebing found his way back to Bobcat of Buffalo ASCS Patriot Sprint Group victory lane after a six-week hiatus, using his dominance at Penn Can Speedway to regain the honor of winningest driver in PSG history in Friday night's 20-lap feature.

Like last year at Penn Can, "Cobra" jumped out in front early in the race but had to withstand a hard-charging competitor to take the checkered flag.

Brooke Bowman, in his first career ASCS Patriot start, caught Hebing with six laps remaining but was never able to get around the current series point leader.

"We went through the car during the week and tonight it was just perfect," said the Ontario, NY, pilot in victory lane after collecting a series' best 14th career win.

Like last year, when "Cobra" moved from fourth into the lead on the first corner, he had already gotten into fourth on the first lap after starting seventh.

Following a lap two caution for a spinning Chris Shuttleworth, Cobra moved into third under Nick Bashford and then made a three-wide pass around Ray Preston and Bryan Howland, who were battling for the lead.

"It's a tight track but the key thing is that the turns are wide and I was able to get a lot of bite on the top side," Hebing noted after his fifth win of the season and the first with Chevrolet power since opening night.

Bowman had to start scratch on the field after heat race struggles, but was on the march in the feature and quickly moved forward. He was into seventh at the lap two caution and was in fourth by the completion of the fourth lap. During the 15 laps of green flag action Bowman closed on Hebing but was hindered by a lap 17 caution.

"I could feel it before the race even started that the car was completely different and it was just perfect," noted the Chestertown, MD, hotshoe. "I was closing on (Hebing) in the lapped traffic but that last caution (where a lapped car was placed in between he and Hebing) really hurt me. Bowman would easily capture the National Parts Peddler Hard Charger of the Night.

Bryan Howland brought home a self-proclaimed third-place car in the show position. After taking the lead for 0x00bc of a lap, Howland slipped behind Hebing and eventually Bowman. The finish was Howland's fourth consecutive top-five.

Ray Preston earned the pole for the feature by racing from eighth to third, then crossed the stripe fourth after leading the opening three rounds.

Rich Swarthout made his return to action count, passing Nick Bashford off the final corner to round out the top-five. Swarthout was in eighth with two laps to go back but in a repeat of last year's effort, passed three cars in the final two laps.

Bashford was able to cross in sixth, in front of Mike Stelter and heat two winner Don Adamczyk, who was the final car on the lead-lap in his new JEI chassis. Jared Zimbardi and Gary Troutman completed the top ten.
