HEBING DOMINATES ASCS PATRIOT FEATURE AT CANANDAIGUA
CANANDAIGUA, NY (May 20, 2006) - Winning at any track is a blast, but Chuck Hebing had more than just a few reasons to want the win Saturday Night at the Canandaigua Speedway a little bit more.
For the second Bobcat of Buffalo ASCS Patriot Sprint Group event in a row, Hebing took the lead from Bryan Howland on lap five of the 20-lap "A" Main and went on to equal his 2005 win total before the end of May.
"To win here is just so special," said Hebing in victory lane. "I came so close to winning here last year and I'm just glad I was able to hang on with this one."
After winning heat two, "Cobra" started fifth in the feature event and moved up to third in the first corner. Hebing was then into second around polesitter Rich Swarthout before the first lap was ever completed.
Steve Poirier spun in turn one on lap two to bring out the race's only caution. Hebing restarted behind 2005 ASCS Patriot Champion Bryan Howland and made a number of attempts before finally taking over the lead.
Like the Utica-Rome event, Howland was able to get back into the lead momentarily but could not withstand the hard charge of the Cobra Motorhomes and Trailers-F/A Products No. 45, who were also the sponsors on the night at the "Land of Legends". Unlike Utica-Rome, Hebing had a Ford under the hood of his flat-black No. 45 on this night.
"This Ford was just working great," said the Ontario, NY, hotshoe. "I had some problems with the other ones so I appreciate the help."
Coming home behind Hebing was Rich Swarthout, who faded to third in short order after starting on the pole but fought back to second in a valiant effort to revisit victory lane for the first time in over two years. It was Swarthout's best run since he finished second last July at Cayuga County, finishing behind Hebing in that race also."I'm not sure I had anything for Cobra, but if I had any chance of catching him it would have been in lapped traffic," said the driver from nearby Geneva.
Howland continued his impressive start to 2006, finishing third after leading the first five laps. Howland slipped back while battling in lapped traffic and ran out of time to move back up.
Dave Ely worked from his mid-pack starting spot to bring home the Titan Garages and Carports No. 3 in fourth.Mike Stelter, who rounded out the top five in his No. 36, moved up from the 18th starting spot to pick up the National Parts Peddler Hard Charger of the night.
The stars continued in the second set of five, with Jeff Cook and Rick Wilson finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. George Suprick, who swept the Bobcat of Buffalo PSG race at Canandaigua in 2005, finished eighth in his first race in a J&J chassis. Completing the top ten were Ray Preston and Brad Knab.
During the first set of hot laps, Hebing set the fastest average lap around the speedway at 116 m.p.h. In the second group, Hebing brought out a 410 c.i. sprint car in preparation for the World of Outlaws card at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on May 30, an event that will also feature the ASCS Patriot Sprint Group as part of the card. His practice session was short-lived however, as he broke a left front shock and hit the back stretch wall, the only problem he encountered over the course of the night.
