Chuck Hebing Completes Weekend Sweep at Inaugural ASCS Patriot Race at The Hill
BRADFORD, Penn. (June 11, 2006) - There was no Triple Crown winning horse this weekend at the Belmont, but in other Northeast Dirt action, Chuck Hebing's pass on Belmont, NY, driver Chris Muhleisen led to a Triple Crown winning "Cobra" with Ford Horsepower.
Hebing "Snaked" his way around the tight and tacky 1/4-mile of The Hill Raceway to pick up his third win of the weekend, his fourth of the season with the Patriots and sixth overall on the season. It was his 13th career Bobcat of Buffalo ASCS Patriot Sprint Group win, making him the all-time feature leader, moving around Rick Wilson.
"This has been just a real big weekend for us," said the Ontario, NY, hot shoe. "I had to start in the middle of the pack every time but the car was good enough to get up to the front."
Nineteen cars competed in the first ever full-sized sprint car race at The Hill Raceway on Elk Power Inc. Night. The raceway never lost bite, and neither did the Cobra, whose lap times in the feature were comparable to the track record lap of 14.56 seconds that Rich Swarthout ran en route to the win in the Dash for Cash.
After winning heat three from the pole, "Cobra" started back in eighth, but was up to fifth by the second lap. He moved around Don Adamczyk on lap five for fourth and caught a break on a lap seven restart when Rich Swarthout spun out in turn one and collected Mike Stelter, moving Hebing up to second.
Hebing made the bid for the lead on lap ten around Chris Muhleisen on the topside, which was the fast way around the banked paper-clip track. Even though Cobra took over the lead, Muhleisen fought all the way to the finish.
"Muhleisen was real good on the bottom and I really wasn't so I had to be real careful to keep it straight on the top," said the series point leader in victory lane. "I even had to tag the wall a few times, but that was the fast way around the track."
Hebing has now won four consecutive Sprint Car feature events, including the last two Bobcat of Buffalo ASCS Patriot events in his F/A Products, Southcott Properties, Cobra Motorhomes Ford-powered No. 45.
Muhleisen's runner-up finish was his best showing with the Patriots since late 2004. The "Copper Chopper" started on the outside-pole and led the first half of the race, but made a bid for the top spot almost every lap for the rest of the race. He was still happy to bring home the solid result.
"I wasn't sure about sprint cars on this track, but we had a good car," said Muhleisen. "I liked all the restarts because Hebing wasn't that good but if I'm going to finish second, at least I finished second to the best."
Brad Knab moved up from his seventh place starting spot to finish third in his No. 38. It marked the second top five of the year for the Delevan, NY, driver and the fourth consecutive in the top 10.
"I was intimidated by that wall on the top side," Knab admitted after the race. "I'm just glad I was good on the bottom."
Jared Zimbardi was also intimidated by the ominous jersey barrier around the top of the speedway, but that didn't keep "The Juice" from running the topside to a fourth place finish at the closest track on the PSG circuit to his home in Little Valley, NY.
Don Adamczyk continued his streak of top ten finishes, rounding out the top five with his best finish since 2004.
Gary Troutman also had his best run since 2004, finishing sixth, with Chris Shuttleworth ending up seventh. Rounding out the top-10 were Pup Nystrom, the resilient Mike Stelter and Nick Bashford.
Bryan Howland was one of the notables outside of the top ten. After moving back up to fourth on lap eight, "Flyin' Bryan" hit the wall, forcing the Filtrec Corporation No. 51 to the pits and relegating him to 17th.
In addition to Hebing picking up a heat win, Rookie Rob Pietz was victorious in the first heat, and 2005 Rookie of the Year Nick Bashford won his second of the year in heat two.
Look for the Patriots to return to The Hill in the future as it serves as the "Curveball of the Series." The ASCS Patriots will have a weekend off in preparation for the big two-race weekend coming up at the Freedom Raceway and Merrittville Speedway on the following Friday and Saturday.
