Spring Run, PA_ Jimmy Brookens weaved among lapped 600 Sprints for a close win ahead of Jim Young Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park while Mike Dicely charged from the handicap twelfth starting spot and found an outside groove to win - also just ahead of Young.
Two stock car drivers won their first features ever as Dave Fahnestock of Chambersburg survived a grueling crashfest in the V-8 Street Stocks and Jeremy Truax of McConnellsburg led every lap in the four-cylinder thunder cars. Veteran Arlin Brougher of Gettysburg passed Gary Dehart with two to go for his thirteenth season mini stock win and Lawrence Garrison of Beaver Springs won his third Legends Cars feature.
For the Service Truck and Tire Center Race Night next Friday the PA 305 Sprints and the Dwarf Cars join the regular lineup.
With only two cautions in the first third of the 600 Sprints feature, Brookens, the defending champion from Fayetteville, led non-stop from lap eight to the finish with Young on his bumper. At lap 16 he encountered the 00 of Rod Schell and 40 of Matt Preece and for three laps went wider and wider to finally get by them as Young, the defending Valvoline Cup National Champion from Johnstown, closed in. At the thrilling final lap finish both got into the open and Brookens won the drag race out of turn four to the checkers. Chad Criswell, Ryan Greth and Brookens won the heats and an invert four pill draw put Young on the pole.
In an equally thrilling 270 micro feature veteran Rodney Glass of Ft. Loudon took the lead from polesitter Brian Walker on lap two and cruised well ahead of the pack until a lap 16 restart. Dicely, the star of Hyper Racing in Lewisberry, steadily worked his way ahead and challenged Glass on lap 16 and passed him going to the outside in turns three and four on lap 17. Young came from fifth to edge out Glass by a few feet at the finish line for second.
"I tried and tried and finally got lucky and found a groove that was faster," Dicely said in the winners circle after his third win in the last two races. The front five were Dicely, Young, Glass, Sean Good and Craig Myers and the heat winners were Dicely, Todd Steffy and Rob Griffin. Sean Good won the consi and started 22 in the full field of 24.
Garrison started third in the Legends feature and passed Butch Brough for the lead on lap three, never to look back. When the first caution flag flew on lap 16, Garrison had passed or outlasted eight other Legends drivers. Brough stayed close enough to earn second, followed in the front five by Denny Rothermel, Randy Kissinger and Allen Felix. Garrison, Nathan Fisher and Brough won the heats.
Brougher started on the pole of the mini stock feature but Gary Dehart jumped ahead and led the first 18 laps as Eric Mellott and Brougher passed each other and maneuvered for position. On lap 15 Brougher finally locked up second place and on lap 18 he went to the high line into turn one and passed for the lead on the outside to beat Dehart to the checkers by about four lengths. Brougher, Dehart, Jerry Bard, Steve McCartney and Ed Kirby were the front five and the heat winners were McCartney and Kevin Thomas.
Jeremy Truax from third took the lead from Derrick Casner and Tracy Linn on the first lap and then led Melvin Bigler and Ray Middaugh on a stop and go course through several restarts to the finish. The final seven laps went green and the front five were Truax, Bigler, Middaugh, Derrick Caner and Duane Ricker. Chris Casner and Terry Smith won the heats.
Dave Fahnestock said, "Winning at Path Valley has been a dream of mine for three years," after he outlasted the V-8 Street Stock field. Terry O'Donel, from last, passed Randy Patterson on lap eight and again on lap 11 before losing a wheel with one to go and Patterson finished with a rear tire almost flat as Brian Helman spun out of turn four. The front five were Fahnestock, Patterson, Helman, O'Donel and Joe Gearhart and Patterson won the single heat race.
In addition to STTC Race Night, next Friday, August 1, also opens the annual Food Drive Weekend to benefit local food banks and the Friday night cars and sprints, Saturday afternoon karts and Saturday night Strictly Stocks will all have an opportunity to contribute with prizes and freebies for all who bring non-perishables.
