Spring Run, PA_ Four of the six winners Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park were first timers, at least for this season.

Heading the list were Brian Walker of Somerset in the 270 Sprints and Aaron Eichelberger of Dillsburg in the 600 Sprints. Walker was last year's champion at Marion Center, which no longer races micro sprints. Eichelberger is in his first full season at Path Valley in the 600cc class. Both finished just ahead of Hyper Chassis factory racer Mike Dicely, who races both classes.

"This is the toughest field to stay ahead of that I've ever seen," Walker said. Eichelberger added, "Now that we have a win and know we can beat these guys, maybe the next one won't take so long coming."

Veteran Steve McCartney of Doylesburg won his first of the season in the mini stocks and Joe Hawbaker of Mercersburg won for the first time in the four-cylinder thunder cars. McCartney had been a thunder car star before moving up to the faster mini stocks, and Hawbaker had finished first in a previous race but failed to pass the track's stringent tech and weight inspection.

Veterans in victory lane Friday night were Brian Levan of Fleetwood in the Legends Cars, for his second Path Valley and fourth overall win. Frequent winner Tim Fedder of Newport won the Mike Leidy Memorial in the V-8 Street Stocks, coming from last place to take the checkers.

Mike Leidy, of Shirleysburg, had built a street stock to race this season at Path Valley but he succumbed to cancer before ever getting it on the track. His daughter, Pam Cramer of Mt. Union, and granddaughter Kenzie, 11, paced the parade lap of the street stock feature in his #101 and then presented trophies and extra purse money to the top street stock drivers and a special sportsmanship trophy to the last place street stock finisher.

Leidy was most notably a sponsor and crewmember on the championship Bill Henney team and had always wanted to race, his widow Connie said. At age 53, he was a truck driver and freight agent and ready to start racing himself. Path Valley teams and staff raised more than $500 to be contributed in his memory to the American Cancer Society.

A separate special promotion for the Legends Cars of Central Pennsylvania saw Travis Alleman of Chambersburg the cash drawing winner along with the #21 Legends car, following the feature that marked Brian Levan's fourth overall win of the season. "The drivers and teams wanted to give something back to the fans," explained coordinator Don Stevens of Carlisle, "and we want to do this again this season."

As part of the Driver Appreciation Night, the Most Popular Driver award winner was Mike Beidel of Fayetteville, who races the #3D mini stock. Kevin Thomas, who won the vote in the first of these contests sponsored by Photos by Walt Cox, was a close second and third in the voting was Doug Hoffman and his #27 street stock.

Sprints and stock cars race at Path Valley every Friday night, and the July 4 races feature the full size PA 305 Sprints along with the Dwarf Cars and the five regular classes for a repeat appearance of the proven popular National Rifle Association Disabled Shooters Night featuring information and displays on adaptations for those physically challenged. All NRA members will be admitted to the grandstand for half price.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717-349-7111.
