Spring Run, PA_ Two Wheel Promotions raced through a full program and completed eight features before 11 p.m. Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
In the two rain makeups from August 8, Jim Brookens of Fayetteville led all the way in the 600 Sprints and Randy Patterson of Shippensburg used a lapped car to take the lead from Chad Lininger of McConnellsburg with two laps to go.
One feature remains from the rain shortened Aug. 8 races, for the four-cylinder thunder cars, and it will be made up on Pepsi Night, next Friday, August 22. That night is also Public Service Appreciation Night and all firemen, police, ambulance crew members and medics and anyone in similar related fields of public benefit with ID will be admitted free of charge to the grandstands.
The regular night's 600 Sprints feature went to Jim Callahan of McVeytown who led every lap and the 270 Sprints feature went to Mike Dicely of Lewisberry who got the lead from Sean Good on lap ten. Past champion Lynn Knepper of Somerset won in the Dwarf Cars and Barry Welch of Three Springs won his second feature in three weeks in the mini stocks while the night's second V-8 Street Stock winner was Tim Fedder of Newport.
The upset of the nigh was in the four-cylinder thunder cars as Lyle Barnes of Chambersburg started on the pole and led every lap for his first ever Path Valley victory. Barnes led by a full turn before a lap 11 caution and then had to hold off Melvin Bigler, up from a ninth place start, through the final laps. John Rasp and Bigler won the heats and Rasp drew a ten-car inversion pill to put Barnes on the pole. The front five finishers were Barnes, Bigler, Keith Armolt, Dave Ricker, and Terry Smith.
The night's first 600 Sprints feature resumed from where it was curtailed by rain the week before and defending champion Jimmy Brookens romped to the win ahead of Duane Harbaugh, Donnie Hendershot, Jim Young, and Rod Schell in the front five. Only one lap seven caution regrouped the field.
The makeup in the V-8 Street Stocks, which also ran before the night's regular heat races, proved a cliffhanger as Chad Lininger led from the pole position and Randy Patterson pulled alongside him the first time on lap six. Twice more Patterson tried to pass on the outside and with no cautions to close up the field the two encountered Ron Myers Jr. on lap 16 and on lap 18 Patterson got past on the outside as Lininger worked for the shorter inside groove. The front five were Patterson, Lininger, Jeff Johnson, Dave Fahnestock, and Aaron Neuder.
In the night's regular 600 Sprints feature Callahan had to stand off Mike Dicely through the first half and then Donnie Hendershot after Dicely spun in turn four for the race's only caution. Hendershot caught up on laps 11 and 16 but never got past. The front five were Callahan, Hendershot, Duane Harbaugh, Ryan Greth, and Jim Young, and Dicely, Greth and Jim Brookens won the heats.
"It's just as good to win here as to win a national event," said Mike Dicely of his wins two weeks ago in the NMMA Nationals in Missouri. Dicely somehow got past Sean Good on a lap ten restart and held on through a lap 18 caution for the win. The front five were Dicely, Good, Brian Walker, Matt Miller, and Ray Peters. Last year's Rookie of the Year, Josh Dressler, won the consi and the heats went to Chad Myers, Walker and Dicely.
Barry Welch, defying a 'Hill Valley Jinx' in the mini stocks, got a ten-car inversion pill draw to start on the pole and then scooted ahead of Kevin Thomas and Ricky Harper to the checkers. Welch, Thomas, Harper, Eric Mellott, and Ed Kirby were the front five finishers and Steve McCartney and Jerry Bard won the heats.
>From fourth, Lynn Knepper caught pole starter Jeff Barclay on lap seven and never looked back for his Dwarf Cars win. The final 11 laps went non-stop and the front five across the line were Knepper, Wes Zimmerman, Jeff Barclay, Josh Sigman, and Frank Dunkle while Sigman and Knepper picked up the heat wins.
Frequent winner Tim Fedder eked out a win in the night's second V-8 Street Stock main, but praised "That guy in the 75" Chad Lininger from the winners circle for clean, hard racing. As the final ten laps raced non-stop, Lininger twice pulled within view of Fedder's #34. Third through fifth were Randy Patterson, Ron Myers Jr., and Wayne Hawbaker, and Patterson won the single heat.
