Path Valley features five sprint feature winners.
Spring Run, PA_ Five different sprint car winners visited victory lane Friday night as the Path Valley Speedway Park completed eight feature events in a fast night of thrills and flips.
Past champions Jim Callahan of McVeytown and Donnie Hendershot of Clear Spring MD split the two 600 sprints wins, and Rick Mayberry of Mechanicsburg won the PA 305 Sprint feature after finishing first the race before and disqualifying for being two pounds light. Dave Socks of Hagerstown and first-timer Keith Woodson of Lititz split the 270 sprint features.
The Friday night stock car winners, anxious for their $1,000 to win features the following night, were defending champion Arlin Brougher of Gettysburg in the mini stocks and Tim Fedder of Newport in the V-8 street stocks.
Callahan dedicated his win to the memory of Darin Whitsel, the former racer and friend whose memorial race night was scheduled the following night, and thanked a long list of sponsors and supporters headed by Mike Dicely of Hyper Chassis who loaned him an engine. Callahan said a big field of 600 sprints would be at Path Valley the following night, June 8, for the $600 to win memorial.
The 600 sprints feature raced without a caution in less than five minutes and Callahan performed a wing walk to celebrate the end of a mechanical hard luck streak. In contrast, at least five sprints in the previous heats and features bent their wings in flips and crashes.
Mayberry joked that he added enough weight to be sure he could hang on to the win on the scales. The growing PA 305 Sprint division that races every other week at Path Valley raced with only two cautions and welcomed new drivers Rory Janney and Travis Keeney, both in #88 sprints. Von McGee in his Half suffered the night's top heat race crash but made repairs and finished fifth in the feature.
Promoter Ken Geesey praised all of the racers for their cooperation in completing the eight-feature event including two rain makeups in record time. He confirmed that final approval was received Friday afternoon for a fireworks display to accompany the following night's Darin Whitsel Memorial race night.
In other business, Geesey said a Junk Car Race has been added to the scheduled June 29 because the monthly junk car racing had been typographically omitted in the original schedule. The Vintage Car Club race scheduled Friday night is being rescheduled at a later date.
The Dwarf cars that are scheduled to race next Friday night, June 14, will face a full technical inspection, Geesey announced, including tires, weight, and a maximum compression of 210 pounds. Both the Modified and Classic Dwarf Cars will run in the same feature.
Rain makeups from May 31 will continue as bonus features through the month of June.
June 14 is the date for the makeup Legends Cars heats and features. The V-8 street stocks will race double features and heats on June 21, and the four-cylinder thunder car makeup will be June 28. Cars that were not signed in for the May 31 rainout will only race in the regularly scheduled heats and features each Friday.
Special events June 14 also include a Kid's Foot Race and the regular features for Legends, V-8 Street Stocks, mini-stocks and four-cylinder thunder cars. A regular points race for karts and quads is scheduled Saturday, June 15.
