Ellerman, Young and Socks Lead Path Valley Sprints
Spring Run, PA_ Rick Mayberry of Mechanicsburg finished first for the second time this season on Auto Locator Race Night in the PA 305 Sprints, but the win went to defending champion Scott Ellerman of Landisburg after Mayberry weighed in a couple pounds light.
Fresh from a win the week before at Silver Springs, Steve Wilbur who drives the Auto Locator #59 Sprint signed autographs and awarded special Auto Locator prizes, and Auto Locator added purse money for the cars at the bottom of the finish order.
Johnstown's Jim Young broke his jinx in the 600 Sprints to win his first feature after leading more laps in prior races than any two other drivers, and Dave Socks of Hagerstown won his second feature in the 270 Sprints. The 600 Sprints ran without a caution from green to checkers, and the final 14 laps of the 270 feature were non-stop.
Donnie Potts of Artemas, driving Mickey Ritter's #72, won his first feature of the season in the Central PA Legends Cars. Potts started third and caught and passed Vern Smith on lap 13 as the final eighteen laps of the 20-lap feature ran non-stop. Raymond Moore of Defiance used lapped cars to hold off Mark Whitsel in the mini-stocks, and John Rasp of McConnellsburg won his second four-cylinder thunder feature by half a turn ahead of Mike Beidel.
The V-8 street stocks that had their regular night off in the rotation return next week to lead a full set of features May 31. June opens with the regular kart and quad race next Saturday and Two Wheel Promotions moves to Hagerstown Speedway next Sunday, June 2, for the third leg of the AMA Northeast Amateur National Championship motorcycle races on the half-mile track.
Saturday, June 8, is the Darin Whitsel Memorial with open 30-lap features for the 600 Sprints, V-8 street stocks and four-cylinder street stocks. The special Saturday race night is a benefit for the late Darin Whitsel's young children and the features pay $600 to win for the 600 Sprints and $1000 to win for the street stocks and mini stocks. The regular Friday race the night before includes the return of the 305 Sprints and the season's first Canned Food Drive to benefit the local food pantries.
