Oswego, NY . . . Budweiser, the "King of Beers", will return as the title sponsor of the 2001 Classic Weekend, Oswego Speedway¹s showcase event which will be celebrating its 45th anniversary. Daniel Dorsey, President of Eagle Beverage Company, Oswego County distributors of Budweiser, made the announcement shortly after the new year.
Appreciative of the sponsorship renewal, Oswego Promoter Romey Caruso commented, "It¹s only fitting that the ŒKing of Beers¹ crown the winner of the 2001 Budweiser International Classic 200 the ŒKing of Supermodifieds¹. The International Classic 200 is the richest supermodified race in the country because of Budweiser¹s participation. Once again, this year¹s Budweiser Classic champion will pocket $20,000.00 cash plus other prizes and contingency awards that will likely swell his overall winnings to well over $30,000.00."
Eagle¹s Dorsey stated, "We¹re particularly excited about our involvement with Budweiser Classic Weekend in 2001. Eagle Beverage has just acquired the wholesale distributorship in Jefferson and Lewis counties and we¹re looking forward to seeing all those patrons along with our faithful Oswego County customers at Oswego Speedway on Labor Day Weekend for one of the greatest spectacles in short track racing. As in the past, their favorite Anheuser-Busch products including: Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Light and O¹Doul¹s will be available at Oswego¹s famous concession stands on Classic Weekend and throughout the 2001 racing season."
Undoubtedly, Greg Furlong is excited about Budweiser¹s Classic sponsorship renewal as he goes for an unprecedented hat trick in 2001. Twice defending champion, Furlong needed some late race traffic in last year¹s 200 to get by Randy Ritzkes with just 3 laps to go robbing Ritzkes of the victory and bragging rights of leading all 200 laps, which was accomplished only by the legendary Jim Shampine in 1980. With their back to back Budweiser Int¹l Classic 200 wins, Furlong Racing has garnered over $60,000.00 in cash and prizes including two Champion Rings from Wholesale Diamond Exchange.
There will be an open practice session for all divisions on Friday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend (August 31st) beginning at 1 pm. Immediately following this practice, the Party In The Pits will get underway. Race cars and race teams can stay in the pit area after warm-ups and the super cruise cars will be staged around the race track. Popular CNY oldies band, Dunes & The Del-Tunes, will be back as the featured entertainment with fireworks, awards ceremony and pit stop competition adding to the festivities. Admission is FREE for the annual Party In The Pits celebration.
On Saturday, September 1st, the ISMA winged supers will invade the steel palace along with the winged midgets, the limited supers and the super stocks for an action packed day of racing. There will be a full card of qualifiers along with a 25 lap super stock feature, National Parts Peddler Midget 25, the Budweiser ISMA Super Nationals 50 lapper and the Limited Super Nationals 50. Race time on Saturday has been moved up from 4 pm to 2 pm so that supermodified race teams looking to compete both days have more time to prepare for Sunday and spectators not camping can get an earlier start home.
On Sunday, September 2nd, the format for the Budweiser Int¹l Classic will be the same as in previous years with supermodified time trials set for 11 am followed by the year end awards ceremony, qualifiers, Bud Light "B" Main and the Budweiser International Classic 200. One change of note is that once the time trials start at 11 am, the rest of the program will follow immediately with no advertised time being set for any race. Race day general admission tickets will be available for the Bud Classic at $33.00 for adults and $10.00 for children. New for 2001 is a weekend adult general admission ticket for $50.00 and a weekend child general admission ticket for $14.00, which is a savings of $8.00 and $6.00 respectively if you plan to attend both Saturday and Sunday of Classic Weekend.
