OSKALOOSA, IOWA - Jeff Shepard came away with a $5,000 victory at Southern Iowa Speedway Monday, August 9, 2004, topping a stellar field of 45 competitors at the 9th Annual Front Row Challenge.
Shepard survived a torrid battle throughout the 25 lap event with fellow front row starter Lance Dewease to claim the win with his Barry Jackson-owned JEI-chassied Kriner--powered entry.
"I drove my ass off," said Shepard after the event. "This has been the most awesome win I have ever had. Lance and I had a hell of a race going on. He'd slide me and I'd slide him back. Once I got out front, I got caught in lapped traffic, and I went to the bottom and lost my momentum. Dewease saw his chance to get around me and he did on the top. I got the lead back from him, and that is the hardest I have ever drove a sprint car. I felt the engine sputter going into turn one on the white flag lap, and actually ran out of fuel going down the back stretch on that last lap. Momentum carried me to the checkered and the win."
As Shepard and Dewease battled for the top spot, Danny Lasoski was charging from the rear in an attempt to claim the $50,000 Front Row Challenge money after electing to start at the rear.
Behind Shepard and Dewease, fifth place starter Shane Stewart was moving forward into third spot after a wicked battle with Brian Brown who had started third.
Three yellow flags regrouped the field together allowing Lasoski to gain on the leaders, but Lasoski ran out of laps in his quest for the $50,000 Front Row Challenge bonus money, eventually finished in fourth behind Shepard, Dewease, and Stewart, with Lasoski's nephew Brian Brown rounding out the top five finishing positions.
Winning car owner Barry Jackson related after the race that the decision to come to Iowa came in a late night phone call from engine builder Bob Kriner less than two weeks ago.
"This ranks right up there as one of my biggest accomplishments," said Jackson, a first year chassis manufacturer who has built 40 chassis with his new JEI Chassis Company. "Bob Kriner called me and convinced me to build a car for out here as long as I would put Jeff Shepard in it to drive. Part of the deal was that Kriner would build us an engine that could get the job done and put us in front. Russell Mitten and myself built this chassis and car in 8 days and hauled out here to see what we had. Kasey Kahne called and loaned us a back up JEI car that he had in Charlotte, and Russell went down and picked it up in case we needed a back up. Most of all, we all want to thank our friends that helped put this deal together, and especially thank our wives for understanding that the 20 hour days and the support they gave us for this project wasn't unnoticed."
