Rilat & Wright Take O'Reilly ASCS Battle to State Fair Speedway
TULSA, Okla. (June 21, 2004) - Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway will continue to celebrate its 50th Anniversary of racing in grand fashion, as the O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers joins forces with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region competitors atop the three-eighths mile clay oval this Friday night.
Texas hotshoes Travis Rilat and Gary Wright lead the ASCS National Tour shoes into Friday's card, with Fort Worth's Kevin Ramey leading the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region contenders into the event.
After Rilat edged Wright for the 2003 ASCS National championship by just 12 markers, the closest finish in series history, the duo have continued their battles on the track in 2004, combining to win eight of eleven features thus far.
Rilat swept this past weekend's double-header at Delta Bowl Speedway in Tunica, MS, to extend his season win total to five in O'Reilly ASCS National Tour action and eleven overall. The sweep also moved Rilat two points ahead of Wright in the series championship points chase.
While Rilat and Wright have tried to monopolize victory lane journeys, it was 2001 series champion Zach Chappell of Talala, OK, breaking the Texas stranglehold on victory lane with a recent victory at Nebraska Raceway Park. Chappell currently sits third in points, just 46 markers out of the lead.
Other top National contenders expected this Friday night include fourth-ranked Darren Stewart of Bixby, former series champion Garry Lee Maier, Sapulpa's Cody Branchcomb, Toby Brown, Oklahoma City's Jimmy Taylor and Brodix Rookie of the Year contenders A.G. Rains, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. and Natalie Sather, who collected her first career checkered flag by topping a heat race this past Saturday night in Tunica, MS.
Defending Sooner Region champion Ramey leads the way for the Sooner Region after topping the series' most recent event at Cowtown Speedway on May 29. Ramey holds a narrow four point advantage over Oklahoma City's Andy Shouse in the Sooner Region point chase.
Other top Sooner Region drivers expected to be on hand include Norman's Danny Jennings, Tulsa area drivers Sean McClelland, Foster Landon and J.P. Bailey, Kansas pilots Tony Bruce, Jr., and Jason Martin, and Texas drivers Preston Peebles II, Brian Harvill and Barry McCord.
With a large contingent of cars expected, Friday night's card is set to get under way at 7:00 p.m.
