Shane leads Stewart sweep of ASCS Speedweek Round Three at OKC
ASCS - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (June 1, 2003) - Mike Stewart was on cloud nine as the checkered flag flew on the third round of the 11th Annual American Sprint Car Series Speedweek 25-lap feature at State Fair Speedway Sunday night. No wonder, as he had just watched his sons Shane and Darren sweep the top two finishing positions.
After starting 14th in the main event, Shane Stewart charged through the field and raced past younger brother Darren on the 19th round to take command en route to his third O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers feature triumph of the season.
Starting from the pole, Darren Stewart outgunned Marcus Jackson at the drop of the green flag, with fourth-starter Kevin Ramey racing into second through the first two corners. The start was negated when Ramey looped his machine in turn four however. Ramey was unable to rejoin the action.
Darren Stewart once again jumped into the lead as the race got underway, with Zach Chappell quickly moving into second. Darren Stewart fought Chappell off for three rounds before the 2001 ASCS National champion raced into the lead in turn two on the third circuit. The lead battle continued over the next few rounds, with Darren Stewart ducking underneath Chappell in turns three and four on the sixth lap to regain the lead.
As Darren Stewart and Chappell diced for the lead in the early rounds with Danny Jennings and Nick Smith in pursuit, Shane Stewart cracked the top five by the sixth round. Shane slipped around Smith for fourth following a lap eight caution for Cody Branchcomb's disabled mount, then overtook Jennings for third three rounds later.
Darren Stewart continued to lead Chappell and Shane Stewart following a 12th lap caution for a turn three skirmish that eliminated Larry Neighbors and Jackson. Mike Peters spun off the turn three banking to avoid the melee, while Nebraska's Billy Alley took evasive action to avoid Neighbors' mount and kept his machine under power.
With action resuming, Darren Stewart built a six car-length advantage over Chappell by the 16th round, as Shane Stewart took advantage of the high line through turns one and two to race into second on the 17th circuit. Shane reeled in Darren and utilized the same high line through one and two to take command two laps later.
Shane Stewart then raced to the checkered flag with a half straightaway advantage in Scott Chilcutt's Wesmar-powered Pro Lube Center/Cox Communications/Brodix MCI-chassis. Darren Stewart padded his series point lead with his runner-up finish, while Chappell held off 23rd-starter Gary Wright over the closing rounds to claim the show position, with Smith rounding out the top five.
B Feature winners Travis Rilat and Wayne Johnson raced from the 17th and 18th starting positions to finish sixth and seventh, with Jan Howard crossing the stripe eighth after starting 22nd. Alley notched a ninth place finish after starting 16th, while Garry Lee Maier came from 21st to round out the top ten.
Jennings, Darren Stewart, Jackson, Rick Williams, Gary Owens and Smith each earned heat race victories for the stout 45-car field.
Wright was the apparent winner in the second heat race, but was disqualified when he failed to report directly to the scales. Wright then utilized a provisional starting position for the main event, in which he dazzled the crowd by charging from the rear to post a fourth place finish, allowing him to maintain a narrow two point advantage over Shane Stewart in the ASCS Speedweek points chase, with five nights of racing remaining.
