Wood Whittles Controversial OKC O'Reilly ASCS Win
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (June 25, 2004) - Danny Wood and Kevin Ramey squared off for the second time in less than a month of American Sprint Car Series racing action, with Wood prevailing this time in Friday night's 25-lap O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers feature at State Fair Speedway.
After Ramey edged Wood in a torrid American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region shootout at Cowtown Speedway on Memorial Day weekend, the pair picked up Friday night where they left off. Wood battled past Ramey on the 18th round, with Ramey sliding to a wild stop with front end damage, then raced to victory lane amidst a swirl of controversy after posting his eighth career ASCS National Tour victory and first since August 28, 1999, at Joplin, MO.
"He should have known what was coming," Wood proclaimed in victory lane. "He cut me off a couple of times there coming off of four. When I got under him in one and two, he should have known what was gonna happen."
Wood continued, "The fans here in Oklahoma City have always been so good to me, it really means a lot to win one here. That was a really good race, I wish it would have happened a little different than it did, but that's racing."
Brodix Rookie of the Year contender A.G. Rains and defending Sooner Region champ Ramey led the field to the green flag, with Wood gridding in sixth. As action got under way, Rains and Ramey battled through the opening two corners before Ramey edged into the lead on the backstretch.
With Ramey leading the way, Wood advanced to fourth by the second round before disposing of Zach Chappell for third on the fourth lap. Ramey gradually established a ten car-length advantage as Rains held off Wood for second, surviving a pair of cautions for minor spins in the opening ten rounds.
On the lap 11 restart following the second caution, Wood made quick work of Rains in turns one and two to take over second, setting his sights on Ramey. Wood closed on Ramey's rear bumper by the 14th round and tried unsuccessfully to squeeze underneath the leader for several rounds.
As the duo entered turn one on the 18th round, Ramey slipped high enough for Wood to slide underneath. Wheel-to-wheel exiting turn two, the pair made contact, with Ramey bouncing wildly off the backstretch with front end damage. As Wood continued, a disgusted Ramey was forced pitside for the final rounds.
Back under way, Wood was unstoppable over the final eight rounds, racing to the checkered flag with a comfortable advantage aboard the Wells-powered Harvill Industries No. 44 Eagle. Rains posted his best finish of the season by crossing the stripe in second, with Chappell, current ASCS National Tour point leader Travis Rilat and Larry Neighbors rounding out the top five.
Gary Wright advanced from 11th to finish a close sixth, with 12th-starter Garry Lee Maier in seventh. Darren Stewart charged from 15th to eighth, with Sooner Region representatives Danny Jennings and Sean McClelland completing the top ten. Foster Landon earned the race's Hard Charger award by racing from 19th to eleventh at the line.
Wood, J.P. Bailey, McClelland, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and Rains topped heat race action for the strong 38-car field, with Stewart and Nick Smith splitting victory honors in the twin 12-lap B Mains.
