Wright racks up win number 11 in O'Reilly ASCS action at OKC
Lonnie Wheatley, ASCS - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (August 1, 2003) - Gary Wright fought off Zach Chappell's challenges over the first half of the race then slipped away in lapped traffic to post his series-best eleventh O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers feature triumph of the season by topping Friday night's 25-lap main event at State Fair Speedway.
Defending ASCS Sooner Region champion Danny Jennings led the feature field to the green flag, but it was outside front row starter Wright charging into the lead as the pack raced off turn two. Jennings slid high in turns three and four on the opening round, with Chappell and Robert Sellers racing by in pursuit of Wright.
With Wright setting the pace, Chappell moved up to challenge on several occasions in the early rounds, pulling alongside the Hooks, TX, hotshoe on the low side on successive laps seven and eight, only to have Wright successfully fend off the bid for the lead.
Chappell made a move to the high side exiting turn two several laps later, but Wright once again fought off the challenge, then as lapped traffic came into play on the 14th round, Wright stuck to the cushion and raced away from his challengers.
As Wright fought his way through heavy traffic in the closing laps, Chappell attempted to close the gap but Wright proved too strong as he rolled to victory lane in the Salina-powered Southwest Express/The Shop/Richwood Construction Maxim.
Chappell took the checkered flag in second, while ASCS Sooner Region point leader Kevin Ramey padded his regional point lead by fending off Travis Rilat over the closing rounds to snare the show position. After utilizing a provisional starting position for the main event, Rilat ripped through the field to claim fourth and Hard Charger honors, while current series point leader Darren Stewart snared a precious four points in the championship battle by passing two cars on the final lap to round out the top five.
Derek Drown crossed the stripe in sixth, with Sellers, Jennings, Toby Brown and 17th-starter Sam Hafertepe, Jr., completing the top ten.
Stewart, Jennings, Chappell and Wright each claimed heat race victories, with Hafertepe topping the 12-lap B Feature.
Rilat trimmed two points off Stewart's point lead, narrowing the margin to ten points. Chappell and Wright both gained ground in the four-driver dogfight for the lead, with Chappell 22 points out of the lead and Wright 46 points behind Stewart.
As Love's Travel Stop & Country Stores kicked off its annual fund-raising drive for the Children's Miracle Network, $1,200 was raised over the course of the evening through raffles for Chili Bowl prize packages and two-seater Sprint Car rides provided by Toby Brown in the Brown Racing Xpress two-seater.
