O'Reilly ASCS takes tight point battle to OKC

TULSA, Okla. (May 5, 2003) - With a mere 16 points separating the top four in series points, the O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers is set to invade Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway for the first time this season on Friday night, May 9. Joining the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour forces on the card will be their ASCS Sooner Region rivals.

On the strength of four top five finishes through the series' first five events, Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Darren Stewart of Bixby, OK, leads the series into the event atop the three-eighths mile clay oval by the slimmest of margins, as he holds a two point edge over Forney, TX, hotshoe Travis Rilat, who has raced to victory lane in two of the last three events.

Hailing from Talala, OK, 2001 ASCS National champion Zach Chappell, who won the season opener, is just ten points out of the lead in third, while Hooks, TX, ace Gary Wright, still seeking his first O'Reilly ASCS triumph of 2003, is just 16 markers out of the lead in fourth.

Other top national contenders expected to be on hand include 2002 ASCS Rookie of the Year Cody Branchcomb, who comes off his best career finish this past weekend in Louisiana, Missouri's Toby Brown, Houston's Rick Behr, Flower Mound, TX, teen Matt Clevenger and Garry Lee Maier of Cimarron, KS.

With two victories in the opening three events for the ASCS Sooner Region, Ft. Worth's Kevin Ramey leads the Sooner Region forces into the combined event. Other top Sooner Region contenders include Robert Sellers, Sean McClelland, Travis Scott, Derek Drown, Brian Harvill, James Shoun, Roy Larkin, Stephanie Chappell and defending Sooner Region champion Danny Jennings.

Several regular State Fair Speedway competitors will take on the ASCS stars as well, including Mike Peters, Larry Neighbors, Gary Flatt, Kerry McAllister and Randy Dickson.

Approximately 40 Sprint Cars are expected for the night of racing action at State Fair Speedway, which is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.

In conjunction with the event, Zach and Stephanie Chappell will be have their cars on display and meet with fans at the Love's Travel Stop located at I-40 & Morgan Road in Oklahoma City from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The 2003 O'Reilly Auto Parts American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers features approximately 50 nights of racing at 25 different tracks throughout Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Including the Regional events throughout the Gulf South, Sooner and Rocky Mountain Regions, the American Sprint Car Series will present close to 100 nights of racing at nearly 50 different tracks in fourteen states.
