Jason Sides Wins First Career Northern Sprint Tour Feature
Bartlett, Tenn. native Jason Sides picked up his first career Northern Sprint Tour victory Wednesday night in the 30 lap feature event at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore. It was the second time in this Northwest Speedweek that a driver picked up his first career win. The other was Danny Horner of Cottage Grove, Ore. who saw his two race win streak come to an end.
The win over the 35 car field didn't look as though it was going to go to Sides, but rather Mt. Vernon, Wash.'s Marc Huson who took the lead from the pole and continued to open a large gap over Sides, Campbell, Calif. resident Brent Kaeding, Steve Kent from Fresno, Calif., and Roger Crockett out of Medford, Ore. Huson maintained the lead throughout lapped traffic which the leaders caught in the first handful of laps. The only front runner to get caught up with a lapped vehicle was Kent who lost fourth place on the seventh lap to Crockett.
The majority of the field kept itself sorted out for the majority of the duration of the race until things got interesting up front. On lap 25, just as the Huson was entering turn three, the cars of Lake Stevens, Wash.'s Travis Jacobson and Henry Van Dam from Enumclaw, Wash. came together just ahead of the leader. Huson had no where to go except into the melee where Seth Bergman of Snohomish, Wash. would then join in. The incident moved Sides to the lead.
But he too wasn't immune to potential problems with traffic in front of him. Coming out of turn four to pick up the white flag on the end of the lead lap, Boise, Idaho resident Joe Ramaker spun and collected Shane Forte from Junction City, Ore. Sides, who had Kaeding and Crockett hot on his heels, had to check up in a hurry and ease his way between the two stalled cars.
That final stoppage set up a green-white-checkered finish which Sides won ahead of Kaeding, Crockett, Kent, and Bill Nutter from Central Point, Ore. The rest of the top-10 were Everett, Wash.'s Rick Fauver, Horner, Cale Carder out of Phoenix, Ore., Randy Van Aagten from Shelton, Wash., and Herman Klein of Sacramento, Calif.
At the start of the 15 lap "B" main, Horner took the early lead from his pole position and steadily pulled away. The top-4 positions, who as well transferred to the main event, were constantly changing throughout the first half of the race between Shawn Smith who hails from Nampa, Idaho, Dallas Zuniga from Creswell, Ore., and Nutter. The first of two yellow flags came on lap 10 when debris fell on the front straightaway, and simultaneously, Fairbanks, Alaska's Steve Martin spun in turn two. The second occurred on lap 13 when Jared Ridge of Snohomish, Wash. spun in the second turn and collected Meridian, Idaho's Randy Pierce as well as Brad Holmes of Cosmopolis, Wash. Holmes would then play a part at the end of the race. He got into the fence in turn four and tipped over on the last lap, but not before Horner crossed under the checkered to make the race official. Going along with Horner to the feature was Nutter, Van Aagten, and Bergman who came from the "C".
Huson was victorious in the 6 lap dash to earn the pole for the "A" main. The rest of the field set the next five starting spots in the main event. They were Sides, Kaeding, Crockett, Kent, and Carder.
The brief 8 lap "C" main was easily won by Placerville, Calif. competitor Jimmy Trulli. Six of the seven cars in the field transferred up to the "B" main. Along with Trulli, those were Bergman, Shelton, Wash.'s Jay Cole, Jeff Thompson of Harrisburg, Ore., Braden Etchison from Eugene, Ore., and Pat Desbiens out of Roseburg, Ore.
Of the four heat races of 10 laps each, T.J. Winningham from Gold Hill, Ore. was the winner of the first taking with him straight to the "A" main Fauver, Van Dam, and Sides. Klein won the second heat followed by Jacobson, Carder, and Kent. The third heat went to Huson over Ramaker, Tacoma, Wash.'s Mitch Olson, and Adam Main of Grass Valley, Calif. Rob Held from Sutherlin, Ore. was victorious in the fourth and final 10 lapper ahead of Crockett, Kaeding, and Forte.
Quick time on the night went to Horner with a time of 12.776.
