Northern Sprint Tour Set For "Big E" Weekend
The Northern Sprint Tour makes its final 2006 visit to Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. next Thursday, August 24th. As it has in the past, the night will kickoff the racing portion of the "Big E" weekend. The series will precede two nights of action for the new National Sprint Tour.
With the sprintcar world's eyes centered on Elma there's never any telling who will be a surprise entrant in the field. One of those in last year's version of this race was Shane Stewart of Bixby, Okla. But he couldn't top multi-time Knoxville (IA) Raceway champion Terry McCarl from Altoona, Iowa. McCarl pulled off the 30-lap victory over the 41 car field in what is his only career race with the NST.
The latest visit to GHR for the NST was just one month ago for the annual Evergreen State Sprint Challenge. The two night event culminated with Shelton, Wash.'s Jay Cole toping the 41 car field in the biggest win of his career and picking up the $5,000 first prize in front of the home crowd. It was no easy feat either as Cole had to fend off National Tour regular Jason Sides from Bartlett, Tenn., Enumclaw, Wash. native and NASCAR Nextel Cup series standout Kasey Kahne, west coast legend Steve Kent of Fresno, Calif., and Medford, Ore. resident and four time series champ Roger Crockett.
With the exception of Kahne, all of those competitors are expected to compete again next Thursday. Other notables set to appear are points leader Danny Horner of Cottage Grove, Ore., defending series champion Bill Nutter from Central Point, Ore., Shawn Smith out of Nampa, Idaho, Fairbanks, Alaska's Steve Martin, Randy VanAagten of Shelton, Wash., and Sacramento, Calif. native Herman Klein.
After Elma the series will take a brief break before getting back to action on Friday, September 15th at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore. and Saturday the 16th at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore.
