Crockett Completes ASCS Northwest Weekend Sweep with Coos Bay Triumph
COOS BAY, Ore. (August 15, 2009) -- Roger Crockett isn't much for numbers --except 179 and now 125.
Crockett snagged his 125th career sprint car victory Saturday night at the Coos Bay Speedway in Coos Bay, Ore., site of the latest American Sprint Car Series Northwest Region event.
It was his 17th win of the season -- fifth in ASCS competition -- and second in as many nights. More importantly, it brings him one win closer to his father's career record of 179 feature victories.
"That was always my goal growing up, but I never knew if I could catch my dad," said Crockett, who resides in Medford, Ore. "To be where we're at, it's amazing really."
It was the Northwest Region's first-ever visit to the Coos Bay Speedway, which Crockett estimated was his 15th different track he has won on.
"The way that I drive the race car and the way that we set the race car up, you can generally go anywhere and not be horrible," Crockett said. "We've got our car handling really good now, a good balance on it.
"Experience definitely helps. The more experience you get the better you get I feel because of the more situations you've seen or been in before. Experience enables you to adapt to some different things thrown at you."
Crockett, who entered the night with a 50-point lead in the standings, started on the pole of the feature and never looked back. He led all 30 laps and lapped all but the top eight competitors.
Steven Tiner of Visalia, Calif., provided Crockett with the only true challenge for the lead on the start. Tiner, who started outside Crockett on the front row, stayed side by side for the first lap and a half before Crockett was able to clear him.
"The start was everything," said Tiner, who finished second. "(You have to) fall in line and ride around, wait for him to make a mistake. But (Crockett's) team doesn't make mistakes. That's why they're first and we're second, but we'll take it.
"When you're good, you're good. And he's the best there is. When the momentum's going his way, it seems like he can do nothing wrong."
Bend, Ore., resident Chad Groves tied a career best with a third-place finish for the second night in a row.
"It was hard for me to get used to the corners on this place," Groves said. "It's almost like this place has eight (corners). It's tight getting in and getting out, but the middle of the corner was really stretched out.
"You just kinda pitch (the car) in, drive it straight and pitch it out. Or hook your left front over the left-side burm and let it pull you like a car wash."
Andy Gregg of Placerville, Calif., was fourth and Snohomish, Wash., resident Jared Ridge, who entered the race second to Crockett in the Northwest Region points, rounded out the top five.
Zach Zimmerly of West Linn, Ore., had a career-best finish of sixth place. He was also the Hard Charger.
