Northwest Speedweek Race #6
Evergreen State Sprint Challenge
Grays Harbor Raceway Park - Elma, WA
July 22, 2000

Any one that stayed home from the final race of Northwest Speedweek and the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge because the weather was threatening, missed some great racing action that saw Steve Kent win the championship at Grays Harbor Raceway park in Elma WA. Taking home the $5000 winners portion of the $30,000 on line for the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge, the Fresno, CA driver also picked up an added $1,000 of the $5,000 Northwest Speedweek 20/10 Bonus by being the highest point winner for the week. Six races in six day at five tracks had taken it's toll on several cars and crews, but there were still 35 cars in the pits on the final night looking for a Piece of the action, and with the feature event line up set by points earned during Evergreen State Sprint Challenge racing, it was hard racing all the way. In after race comments from the podium finishers, Kent said that they had set up the car for a dry slick track and it was a good decision. Second place finisher Rick Fauver of Everett, WA stated that they were on their 3rd motor for the week, his crew had worked extremely hard and he was very happy with his finish. Three third place finishes in the week for Sedro Woolley, WA driver Chad Hillier made it a successful week, but naturally, he would have like to done better. Kent and Barry Martinez held down the front row, with Fauver and Glenn Borden in row two at the green. On the original flag, Greg Brown spun in the first turn collecting Scott Aumen, who flipped. As Kent took the lead on the re-start, Fauver immediately went for second, getting past Everett, WA's Martinez on the back straight on the second circuit of the clay oval, to run about three car lengths behind the leader. For the next 15 laps Kent retained the lead through 3 yellows but was never able to open more than a ten car length lead over the field. Fauver held second with no problem, but Martinez found his third place spot being challenged when Jayme Barnes passed Borden for 4th and started putting the pressure on. Borden, out of Shelton, WA then fell another spot on lap 8 when Arlington, WA driver Jay Smith got by on the back straight. With 10 laps down and the counter clicking, it was Todd Heikes of Ladysmith, BC and Smith making the best moves to the front followed by Chad Hillier. A lap 11 re-start had Heikes, Hillier and Smith running three wide through the first turn and 5th, 6th and 7th as they exited. The red flag flew on lap 17 when Tony Menard went hard into the first turn sliding into Jay Cole. Menard took a nasty crash into the wall, while it put Cole over the fence. With in a couple of laps after green flew again, Smith started to fade as his brakes went away while Lake Stevens, WA's Shawna Wilskey started moving forward, her car seeming to get better as the laps wound down. On lap 20, with Kent and Fauver running a quarter lap in front of the pack, Heikes drifted high in turn two and Hillier made an inside pass for 5th. Next he picked off Barnes and Martinez, to sit 3rd on lap 30. As Wilskey continued her charge forward, she had passed Dan Menne of Ft. Jones, CA, Borden, Smith, Barnes, Heikes and Martinez to sit in 4th behind Hillier when Smith dropped out on lap 35 when a wing mount failed. Following Kent and Fauver to the final checkered flag of the series were Wilskey, Martinez, Barnes and Heikes with Barnes edging Heikes by mere inches for fifth. John Youngquist of Burlington, WA led the B-Main for green to checkered with Rick Smith in tow the entire 15 laps. Coming back from a hard crash on Friday night, Cole ran to a solid third place in a borrowed car. Tacoma's Shawn Rice lost his fourth place spot at the line on lap 13 to Ron Myska of Vacaville, CA with Sutherlin, OR driver Pat Desbiens and Marysville, WA's Tim Levin getting by when he got high in the corner. At the finish it was Youngquist, R. Smith, Cole and Myska transferring to the A-Feature. The C-Main went to Mike Crawford with Rob Johnson, Mellisa Yates and Bob McCord taking transfers also. During the event, Yates could catch Johnson in the corner, but lost the race on the straight. The dash got off to a rocky start when J. Smith went sideways in turn 2 and was clipped by Barnes, who ended up on his side. After getting under way again, Martinez held winner Kent to second place until lap 5 when Kent was able to pull off the pass going through turn 4. In the first heat it was Wilskey going to the lead on the third lap with Kent giving chase for the distance. Kent looked to have the point on lap 9 but Wilskey was able to keep the Californian at bay. After a battle from the green, Fauver was able to pull even with race leader Heikes at the finish line on lap 8 and then take the lead and win. J. Smith tried in vain to catch Nanaimo, BCdriver Tony Menard and settled for fourth. By the time Tim Levin was going to the heat 3 win, with three Oregon drivers in line behind, the track was starting to go dry slick. Roseburg's Scott Adams took second over Jeremy Cooper of Creswell with Springfield's Greg Brown fourth. The final lap had one of the local heroes, Glenn Borden, Jr. of Raymond, WA, keeping Menne, Duncan, BC's Scott Aumen and Hillier away from the winners circle as they followed to the line in that order. {TB| SUMMARY Fast Time - Jay Smith - 15.136 Heat 1 - Shawna Wilskey, Steve Kent, Jayme Barnes, Jeff Thompson, Jeff Hodgson, Ron Myska, Ed Weirsma, Rob Johnson(CA), Kirk Haefs.
