ASCS Northern Plains Region Set for Steele County on Saturday

TULSA, Okla. (September 12, 2006) -- As the latter portion of the 2006 season unfolds, the American Sprint Car Series Northern Plains Region is set to make its final stop of the year at Steele County Speedway in Owatonna, MN, this Saturday night.

In two previous ASCS Northern Plains Region outings at Steele County this year, Minnesota drivers have been successful in defending their home-state turf, with Curt Lund victorious at Owatonna on June 21 and Scott Winters taking top honors on July 9.

With just the two-day Cheater's Day Classic at Huset's Speedway remaining after Saturday's Steele County stop, Watertown, South Dakota's Chuck Swenson can clinch the inaugural ASCS Northern Plains Region championship this Saturday.

Swenson has enjoyed a banner year in ASCS Northern Plains action, by posting 16 top-ten feature runs in 19 events, including 13 top-fives and a handful of wins. Swenson's five wins have come at five different tracks.

While Swenson virtually has the series title in hand, the real battle is for second as only 16 points separate the trio of Lee Grosz, Eric Lutz and Curt Lund. Grosz, the 18-year-old from Harwood, ND, is 14 points ahead of Sioux Falls racer Lutz, with Redwood Falls, MN, shoe Lund just four more points back in fourth.

Brett Geldner of St. Peter, MN, enters Saturday's event ranked fifth, with the balance of the current top ten including Dustin Lindquist (Floodwood, MN), 16-year-old Mike Sitzmann, Jr. (Tappen, ND), Jake Peters (Sioux Falls, SD), Dusty Ballenger (Harrisburg, SD) and Scott Winters (Floodwood, MN).

Saturday's action at Steele County Speedway is slated to go green at 6:00 p.m.

Steele County Speedway is located in Owatonna, MN, off I-35 Exit 40, then one mile east on US 14, then 1.2 miles north on CR 45. For more information, contact the track at 507-363-9124.

In its first year of action, the all-new ASCS Northern Plains Region has a full slate of 22 events at eleven different tracks throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Wisconsin.

In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing at nearly 100 tracks throughout 27 different states and Canada in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
