Jason Johnson Snatches ASCS Northern Plains Win at I-90
HARTFORD, SD (June 13, 2006) -- Louisiana's Jasonohnson continued his winning ways by racing from the twelfth starting position to snare victory honors in Tuesday night's 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Northern Plains Region feature event at I-90 Speedway. ohnson found the quick line around the racetrack in the late stages and blasted by Brian Brown on the white flag lap en route to victory lane aboard Lanny Row's Wesmar-powered The Shop Diesel Service/Custom Equipment Design No. 41 Eagle.
Texas hotshoe Sam Hafertepe, Jr., followed Johnson's lead to take the runner-up slot, with Brown settling for the show position.
Outside front row starter Johnn Cressman outgunned polesitter Dustin Lindquist for the point at the drop of the green flag, with fourth-starter Brown quickly racing into second. While Cressman and Brown paced the early rounds, eighth-starter Hafertepe and sixth-row starter Johnson were both on the move.
Hafertepe blasted into the top five on the opening round and took third from Chad Humston on the sixth round. Meanwhile, Johnson picked off four positions in the opening three rounds and sat seventh on what proved to be a critical lap ten restart.
After the caution flew for Troy Meyer with nine laps in the books, Brown put a big slide job on Cressman for the lead as the pair raced into turns one and two on the restart. The pair made contact exiting turn two, with Cressman spinning off the track and then exiting from the race.
With Hafertepe on Brown's rear nerf bar on the restart, Johnson quickly disposed of Lindquist and Humston to move into fourth behind Gregg Bakker. Over the ensuing laps, Brown inched out to a six car-length advantage as Hafertepe and Bakker raced wheel-to-wheel for the runner-up slot for several laps directly in front of Johnson.
With Hafertepe adeptly running the low line while Bakker rode the rim, the pair swapped the runner-up slot a handful of times before Johnson discovered the key to victory lane. Johnson found the fast way to be entering turn one on the topside, then diamonding down to the bottom of turn two. ohnson made the line work to race past Bakker for third on the 20th circuit, then disposed of Hafertepe in the same manner a lap later to take over second. Then as race leader Brown briefly hesitated behind a lapped car, Johnson pounced and took command with the same move, racing underneath Brown exiting turn two and into the lead on the backstretch of the 24th circuit. ohnson then hit the stripe to collect his seventh overall ASCS feature win of the year, with Hafertepe charging past Brown as well for second.JBrown settled for third, with Bakker and Lindquist rounding out the top five.
Tony Bruce, Jr., crossed the stripe sixth, with 13th-starter Dusty Zomer, 19th-starter Micah Schliemann, 17th-starter Natalie Sather and current ASCS Northern Plains Region point leader Chuck Swenson completing the top ten. Swenson advanced eight positions after making a late move to transfer from a "B" Main.
Cressman, Humston, Bakker, Bruce and Lindquist topped heat race action for the 41-car field, with Jake Peters and Curt Lund winning the twin "B" Mains.
