With only two races left in the hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour's Year 2001 Season, the Season Championship is still up for grabs. Defending champion Shawna Wilskey of Lake Stevens, WA, working to make it three in a row and become the first four time Northern Sprint Tour champion, trails the 1214 point total of Rio Linda, CA driver Roger Crockett by 50 points as the series goes into the final two days of racing.
A good run by Crockett on Friday, September 14th at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, OR could lock up his first championship while a bad evening on the track could once again take the championship battle to Riverside Speedway in Cottage Grove, OR on Saturday the 15th for the final race.
Crockett's 50 point lead over Wilskey's 1164 points may not lock him in top spot, but his 140 point advantage over Jason Solwold in third place basically guarantees that he will not fall lower than second place. Solwold, of Burlington, WA and holding on to 1074 points will also be hard pressed to over come Wilskey unless something drastic keeps her from racing one of the nights.
Trailing the top three, Jayme Barnes of Everett, WA sets in fourth with 1032 points and could move up or down over the weekend. Everett WA's Rick Fauver hangs onto fifth place with 1005 points and with the sixth place driver holding 779 points will not be challenged.
Holding those 779 points in sixth place is Jeremy Cooper of Creswell, OR. Cooper's points put him in the lead for Rookie of the Year honors.
Filling out the top ten spots are Barry Martinez, Lynnwood, WA with 771 points, Scott Aumen out of Duncan, BC with 713 points, Shelton, WA driver Jay Cole with a total of 680 points and Jay R. Harkness of Acme, WA with 678 points.
Following Cooper in the race for "Rookie of the Year" honors is Brandon Harkness of Acme, WA who has 641 points. Third in the rookie race is Roseburg, OR driver Melissa Yates with a 232 point total.
The hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour's Year 2001 Season has been a hard fought one to this point and if the history of the series is any indicator, the final two races of the season may well be the best of the year. It is a sure bet that tensions will be high and the racing exciting as the tour's 6th season comes to a close.
