YELLVILLE, Ark. (June 20, 2003) - Zach Chappell took advantage of lapped traffic to slip by pacesetter Tim Crawley on the 19th round en route to winning Friday night's 25-lap O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour feature presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers at North Central Arkansas Speedway. The victory marked the second triumph of the season for the 2001 ASCS National champion.
After the initial attempt to start the 22-car main event was waved off when Dewayne Prince flipped entering turn one, Ernie Ainsworth, who earned the pole position by coming from ninth to win the second heat race, and Gary Wright led the field to the green flag. Wright took command as the field exited turn two, with third-starting Crawley quickly moving into second. With Crawley challenging for the point, Wright's run came to a premature end after two circuits with a broken lower shaft in the rear end.
As Crawley raced to a half straightaway lead following the restart, Ainsworth fought off the battling trio of sixth-starter Chappell, eighth-starter Travis Rilat and Jason Martin. Ainsworth succumbed to the trio on the fifth round, with Chappell seizing command of second by the seventh round when Martin looped his machine in turn four, bringing out the race's final caution.
Crawley continued to set the pace as action resumed, with Chappell and Rilat in tow. As lapped traffic came into play at the midway point, Chappell quickly closed the gap and began pressuring Crawley for the lead by the 15th round. Chappell's bids for the lead proved successful on the 19th round when Crawley slid high in turn two in heavy traffic, with Chappell alertly charging into the lead on the low side.
Chappell had to contend with traffic as well over the closing rounds, but held off Crawley to post the victory aboard the Carbone-powered Champco Concrete Construction Maxim. Crawley settled for second, with Rilat surviving rear-end problems over the final laps to secure the show position. Current series point leader Darren Stewart claimed fourth, with Ainsworth rounding out the top five.
Toby Brown crossed the stripe sixth, with Pete Butler in seventh. Cody Branchcomb charged from 16th to finish eighth, with Kevin Battles, subbing for Robert Sellers aboard Jim Bailey's mount, finishing ninth in his first outing of the year. Matt Clevenger rebounded from a lap two spin to complete the top ten.
Wright, Ainsworth and Stewart were each victorious in heat race action.
