Sodus, NY - Unseasonably rainy weather has taken its toll on early season racing programs throughout the Northeast. The 2000 Woodard's Concrete Products Central New York Mini Sprint (CNYMS) Tour suffered three consecutive rainouts of its season opener before finally getting things underway at Frogtown International Speedway earlier this month. At Utica-Rome Speedway, the rain has not only affected weekly shows, but has delayed completion of the new 3/8 mile track under construction inside the ½ mile oval. This threatened the much-anticipated return of CNYMS to Utica-Rome next weekend. But late last week, the promoters at Utica-Rome and CNYMS officials agreed the mini sprints would tackle the ½ mile oval on Sunday, June 25. "The mini sprints are not strangers to larger tracks," said CNYMS race promotions director Mike Emhof. "We have run competitive shows the last two years at Fonda, Albany-Saratoga, and Devil's Bowl (VT)." So, drivers will buckle in and cinch down the shoulder straps to chase the CNYMS tour points championship on the "big" track. The racing should be fast and furious, as laps times at comparable tracks in the past have been a second faster than big block modifieds.
