New Egypt, NJ (Aug. 12) -- With violent thunderstorms hammering most of New Jersey and vicinity, management at New Egypt Speedway called it a night an hour before gates were scheduled to open on Saturday night, succumbing to rain for the fourth time this season.
"We had calls coming in all day, from all over New Jersey, saying it was raining in Hackettstown, Bridgewater, Flemington, Toms River, Atlantic City," said track owner Rick Grosso Sr. "We gave it our best effort, but with the URC Sprints on the schedule and all their fans traveling such a distance, we figured it would be best all around to cancel before the gates opened."
The popular URC Sprint cars are scheduled to return to New Egypt on Saturday, September 30, as part of a four-division card also featuring big-block Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks.
Next Saturday, August 19, it's Kids' Night at New Egypt, with Delran Auto Body sponsoring the track's second annual Kids' Big Wheel Challenge, a trophy race for children 10 and under. In addition, Adam Guker's new Street Stock will be parked behind the grandstands, waiting for the kids to grab a marker or brush and design the car's paint scheme.Gates open at 4 pm, and racing action -- featuring big-block Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks -- gets underway at 6:30 pm. Adult admission is $12, children 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and under are free.
Also upcoming at New Egypt: Mid-State Communications will sponsor a special race for "future winners" in the Modified ranks on Saturday, August 26. The bonus feature is open to drivers who have raced regularly at the 4/10ths mile clay speedway but have never won a Modified race. Then on September 16, Metal Fab will present the second annual Ms. New Egypt Speedway contest. Personable contestants 18 or older can sign up to enter by leaving a name and number at the track office.
