New Egypt, NJ (July 15) -- New Egypt Speedway management was forced to throw in the towel on Saturday's four division race card featuring the URC Sprint Cars, as rain deluged the area in the early morning hours and weather forecasters predicted much of the same for the rest of the day.
Saturday's cancellation is New Egypt's third complete rainout this year, a season that has been plagued with chronic inclement weather. In addition to programs cancelled on April 15, May 20 and July 15, the Central Jersey track suffered through a partial rainout on May 13 and a rain delay on June 17. Two of three appearances thus far by the URC Sprints have succumbed to weather. The popular traveling Sprint Car club will try again at New Egypt on August 12 and September 30.
Next Saturday, July 22, it's Ladies' Night at New Egypt Speedway, with the women bumping the men out of the cockpit to race in Powder Puff events for prize money and trophies. By July 15, 26 leadfoot ladies had registered to drive in the special bill, which features three Powder Puff feature races, for Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks. Myrtle Falkinburg, a former Powder Puff champion in the 1950s at such tracks as Atlantic City and Manahawkin, will serve as honorary starter for the Ladies' Night events, and there'll be giveaways for the girls at the gate.
Those still wishing to sign up for Ladies' Night competition are urged to leave a message, inculding contact number, at the speedway before Friday, July 21. Speedway phone is (609) 758-1900.
