Brightbill Goes The Extra Distance To Win At New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ (May 29) -- In the first extra-distance Modified feature of the season, Sinking Spring, PA's Kenny Brightbill checked out on the field en route to his fourth visit to Victory Lane at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday night.
"They've got the track a little heavier -- it's a better bite for the big blocks," Brightbill told the huge crowd on hand for the Memorial Day Weekend 50 lap event.
Rick Cozze took command at the drop of the green flag with Rick Grosso Jr. in pursuit. Grosso Jr. grabbed the point after several laps of green flag racing as Brightbill made his charge to the front from 17th.On a lap 12 restart, Brightbill moved out in front of Grosso and quickly opened up a sizable lead on the competition. The #19 remained on top through several restarts with Gary Butler, Roger Laureno, Larry McVay and Billy Pauch giving chase. Just as Pauch raced into third, he was forced to exit the race with motor problems. Brightbill continued to master the field as Eddie Cranmer made his way into the front five. Butler's strong second place run was brought to an end on lap 43 with a broken axle. >From there to the checker on lap 50, Brightbill stayed on top for the win. Following him across the finish line were Laureno, Eddie Bohn, Cranmer and Fritz Epright.
Bound Brook, NJ's Rich Scagliotta turned in a strong effort for his first win of the '99 campaign in the Sportsman main event. Starting ninth on the field, Scagliotta worked his way into the lead on a lap 7 restart and maintained a strong hold on the #1 spot through to the checker. Ron John Koczon edged JC Mears for second in a near photo finish, with Keith Brightbill fourth and Jack Swain fifth.
In a wild three car battle to the checker, Allentown, NJ's Pat Freiberger survived the action to post his third Street Stock triumph. The final laps found the top 3 cars running in tight formation with Billy Bauer and Al Cheney III making contact on the final turn. Escaping injury, Bauer crossed the finish line for second followed by Kenny Hammond, Rich Reider and defending division champ Jeff Carpenter.
Keeping his streak alive, Freehold, NJ's Scott Reid picked up his fourth straight checker in the Rookie Sportsman feature. Chasing Reid to the line were Bobby Richards, Chuck Flesch, Darren Cox and Joe Szwed.
The nightly 50/50 drawing paid $1,914.50 to one lucky spectator. Fritz Epright was the winner of the Modified Cash Dash that paid $310.
Next Saturday night, June 5th, it's Scout Night, with Scouts in uniform admitted free. The Rookie Sportsman will graduate with a double point event that completes their series. Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks complete the card. Gates open at 4 pm with warm-ups at 5:30 and the first heat at 6:30. Adult admission is $12, children 7-12 are $4, 6 and under are free.
