Brown Breaks Through for First O'Reilly ASCS National Tour Triumph
GREENWOOD, Neb. (August 3, 2005) -- Brian Brown outlasted Billy Alley to nail down his first career O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores feature triumph by scoring a half car-length victory in Wednesday night's 25-lap feature at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway.
In the process, Brown put a halt to Gary Wright's series record five-race winning streak, as Wright finished a close third behind Brown and Alley.
"Billy's a good friend of mine and I knew he'd race me clean, he was tough on the restarts but I was able to get back by him each time and traffic worked out well enough for us tonight," Brown commented from victory lane.
After racing from eighth to finish second behind Brown in the evening's second heat race, Wright led the feature field to the green flag with Brown alongside. Brown gunned into the early lead, with the red flag flying after one round when Chris Roseland took a wild ride down the front stretch.
Brown led the way on the restart, with Wright and fourth-starter Alley trading slide jobs several times before Alley took command of second on the fourth round, with the caution flying moments later.
Alley slid his way past Brown to lead lap five, only to have Brown return the favor the next time around. Alley kept the heat on Brown until lapped traffic came into play at the midway point. Alley charged past Brown on the 14th round only to see a caution flag for Natalie Sather's turn two spin negate the move.
Brown fought off another Alley slider on the ensuing restart and raced away to a ten car-length advantage aboard the Ostrich-powered Doogs Construction/Jolt Energy Gum No. 21 Maxim until lapped traffic once again became a factor in the final rounds.
Alley closed to Brown's rear bumper with two laps to go, only to see Brown make a swift move around a pair of lapped machines. Alley closed again on the final round and made one last charge off the final corner only to come up less than a car-length short of the victorious Brown.
Wright shadowed the pair throughout and finished just several car-lengths off the lead pace, with ninth-starter Jake Peters and former series champion Zach Chappell rounding out the top five.
Roger Crockett snared sixth, with Garry Lee Maier racing from 17th to finish seventh. Toby Chapman crossed the stripe eighth, with Chad Humston and leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Tony Bruce, Jr., completing the top ten.
Alley, Brian Brown, Humston and Toby Brown topped heat race action, with Maier making a last-lap pass of Darren Stewart to win the 12-lap "B" Main.
