O'Reilly/NCRA Sprint Series Returns to the Track
After being rained out on Mother's Day at 81 Speedway, the O'Reilly/NCRA Sprint Car Series presented by Hoosier Racing Tires returns to the track at two different venues this weekend.
Saturday the 360 hot shoes travel back to southwest Kansas for the first of five scheduled appearances this season at Dodge City (Kan.) Raceway Park. The 2004 season champion Mike Woodruff won both races at Dodge City last year. He pulled off the same double last year at Jetmore Motorplex but ran into some hot drivers at this year's May 6 season opener at Jetmore.
One of those hot drivers was Steve King, the NCRA 360 sprint car champion in 2002-03, who took the checker at Jetmore in front of his hometown fans. He was second and third in the two NCRA races at Dodge City last year and figures to be a strong contender to recapture the crown this season.
C.J. Johnson took the early lead at Jetmore but lapped traffic relegated him to a second place finish. It's still a great way to start the season after finishing fourth in points last year.
Veteran sprint car driver Garry Lee Maier returned to the NCRA ranks after a 10-year absence with a third-place finish at Jetmore. With 45 career NCRA 360 sprint car wins, Maier is the leader in that category and is also quite capable of contending for the season championship.
Sunday the series moves back to 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., just north of Wichita, to make up the show rained out on May 8. Although they had completed all five heats, NCRA officials announced they will run a complete show at 81.
For more information about these shows, contact Dodge City Raceway Park at (620) 225-3277 or 81 Speedway at (316) 755-1781.
