The Northern California Modified Association returned to Altamont Raceway Park, hitting the half mile asphalt oval ready to roll on familiar turf. Two classic heats were run. Steve Amador of Patterson took the checkered in heat one and Dan Gonderman of Antioch claimed the number one position in heat two.
The trophy dash consisted of Pat Ariaz of Manteca on the pole, Ed Amador of Modesto, on the outside, Scott Holloway in Dave Jensen's sprinter held third and Kenny Rines, fast qualifier, in fourth. As they came around to finish lap one, Ariaz got sideways at the flag stand climbed the wall, looking like he would do a flip and managed to land on all fours. He was towed from the track and fifth fast qualifier, Gonderman was drafted to run the dash. Holloway immediately took the lead and took the trophy.
The 20 lap main had Gonderman on the pole, Ed Amador, second, S. Holloway, third, Rines in fourth, and Bert Siverling of Concord in fifth. Unfortunately Larry Teixeira ran over the back wheel of Sam Fries and continued on. Fries steering link broke and he was towed from the track. Tough break for the man running third in overall points. By the third lap "Rocket Man" Rines made it to the front, Gonderman held fast in second, E. Amador taking third, S. Holloway, fourth and Siverling rounding out the top five. The fifth lap had S. Holloway taking third from E. Amador. The race was on between the three top qualifiers, Rines, Gonderman and S. Holloway. "Rim Rider "Holloway passed Rines on the outside and Rines spun out in turn two during lap 13. Rines fell in at the rear and wasn't able to make it to the front. S. Holloway took the checkered, Gonderman, second, E. Amador, third, Teixeira, fourth, and Siverling holding fifth. At press time race results were under protest. NCMA will travel to Reno-Fernley Raceway to do it on the dirt June 15th.
