TULSA, Okla. (May 18, 2009) -- Race fans in and around the southwest Kansas area are in for a treat this coming Memorial Day weekend as the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters invades the State of Kansas for the only time in 2009.
The ultra-competitive Lucas Oil ASCS series, with upwards of 30 championship title contenders, takes to the Jetmore Motorplex for two full nights of competition this Saturday and Sunday. The Steve King Memorial culminates with Sunday night's $10,000 to win championship main event atop the 3/8-mile dirt oval.
Both nights of action at the Jetmore Motorplex will be televised in a one-hour presentation on the VERSUS Network on a tape-delayed basis with scheduled broadcast dates of August 5 (May 23 event) and August 6 (May 24 event).
While the action on the track will reach intensity of epic proportions with the likes of current series points leader Shane Stewart, defending champion Jason Johnson, four-time champion Gary Wright, event promoter Tony Bruce, Jr., Paul McMahan and Jesse Hockett among others, there will be plenty of other activities during the weekend.
Saturday has been declared the Second Annual Steve King Day by the City of Jetmore, KS, with activities including a golf tournament, parade, racecar display, remote control sprint car competition and a quilt show.
Following a Friday evening practice session from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the pits will be open to all fans until 4:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Fans can also pre-purchase a weekend general pass at a discount of just $30 for adults and $20 for children.
The Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters kicked off the 2009 season on March 20-21 with 67 competitors from 17 different states clogging the Devil's Bowl Speedway pit area in Mesquite, TX. After winning the Friday night prelim, Shane Stewart escaped the weekend with a two-point advantage over Saturday victor Jason Johnson.
Since that time, Mother Nature has wreaked havoc with the series, forcing the postponement or cancellation of five consecutive nights of competition.
In the meantime, the Lucas Oil ASCS title contenders have been spreading victories around the country with winners in recent weeks including Shane Stewart (Skagit, WA), Gary Wright (ASCS Lone Star vs. Sooner at Devil's Bowl and ASCS Gulf South at Golden Triangle Raceway Park), Danny Wood (ASCS Sooner at Creek County), Nick Smith (ASCS Lone Star vs. Sooner at State Fair Speedway), Eric Baldaccini (ASCS Gulf South at Houston Raceway Park), Tony Bruce, Jr. (NCRA at Wichita's 81 Speedway), Jack Dover (Eagle, NE), Tim Crawley (I-30 Speedway), Matt Covington (Knoxville Raceway), Gary Taylor (Riverside Speedway), Ricky Logan (Knoxville Raceway and IRA in Wisconsin) and Jesse Hockett (Lake Ozark and Double X Speedways).
