Chapman Chalks Up First ASCS Score with Midwest Win at US 36
CAMERON, MO. (June 23, 2006) -- Lincoln, Nebraska's Toby Chapman scored his first career American Sprint Car Series feature win by acing Friday night's 25-lap ASCS Midwest Region feature at U.S. 36 Raceway.
Chapman, last year's ASCS Midwest Region points runner-up, outgunned Chuck Swenson for the point at the drop of the green flag and led all the way aboard the Eckley/Richards-powered Select Auto No. 84 Maxim.
"We've been having a lot of bad luck this year and we really needed this win," Chapman explained in victory lane. "I'd like to thank my sponsors, Select Auto, Select Auto Body and everyone else that has helped us out this year. Also thanks to my crew Dave, Rich, Steve and Randy."
Earning the pole position by winning his heat race, Chapman led Swenson, Tim Newman, Jay Russell and Rick Ideus in the early stages, wading through a pair of minor cautions along the way.
On a lap six restart, Swenson surrendered the second position when he jumped the turn two cushion and came to a stop on the backstretch with a flat right rear tire. Swenson rejoined the chase at the tail after a quick tire change.
Back under way, it was Newman making a bid for the lead on the low side in turns one and two. But Chapman was up to the challenge, fending off the bid and holding onto the lead.
Newman kept Chapman in his sights the rest of the way, but Chapman worked through lapped traffic flawlessly to capture the victory over Newman, Ideus, 16-year-old Jack Dover and Russell.
Kerry Grabill crossed the stripe in sixth, with Luke Cranston in seventh. Swenson recovered to finish eighth, with Chad Humston and Jim Cameron completing the top ten.
Eric Jobe's night came to an early end with a hard heat race flip in turn four. Jobe was uninjured.
