Nygaard Nabs ASCS Regional Clash Weekend Sweep with Eagle Heroics

EAGLE, Neb. (July 22, 2006) -- A mere 24 hours after scoring his first career American Sprint Car Series feature victory, Wade Nygaard quickly posted series win number two by virtue of some late-race heroics to take victory honors in Saturday night's 25-lap ASCS Northern Plains vs. Midwest Region feature at Eagle Raceway.

After pressuring Chuck Swenson much of the way, Nygaard raced underneath the current ASCS Northern Plains Region point leader exiting turn four on the 24th lap en route to snaring the triumph as the ASCS trod upon Eagle Raceway's high-banked, 1/3-mile clay oval for the first time in series history.

"The plan wasn't really to wait until the white flag lap to take the lead, it just kind of worked out that way," Nygaard explained in victory lane after his second consecutive triumph aboard the Weseman-powered Auto Finance Super Center/North Star Telecom No. 9 Schnee.

Starting from the pole position, Swenson outgunned fellow front row starter Jay Russell for the point at the drop of the green flag. Swenson slipped away in the early rounds as Adam Gullion and Ryan Roberts diced for the second slot just ahead of fifth-starter Nygaard.

But after opening up an eight car-length advantage in the early stages, Gullion and Roberts closed the gap and began to pressure Swenson for the lead. Sensing the challengers, Swenson abandoned the high line and dropped to the low side as the lead pack approached lapped traffic on the tenth circuit.

But when the caution flew two laps later for Toby Chapman's turn four spin, Swenson once again had open track with the caution also negating Roberts' pass of Gullion for second. Roberts wasted little time regaining second when action resumed however, with Nygaard following suit to take over third before the caution flew two laps later for a slowing Scott Winters in turn two.

On the charge, Nygaard blasted by Roberts on the restart and held the runner-up slot when the race's final caution flew three laps later for Tige Jensen, who spun to a stop in turn two with front-end damage.

Back under way, Nygaard wasted little time turning up the heat on Swenson in the battle for the lead. On the extreme low side, Nygaard pulled along Swenson on the 21st round only to have the bid denied.

But when Swenson slid up the track exiting turn two on the 24th circuit, Nygaard quickly pulled alongside down the backstretch and battled into the lead through turns three and four with the white flag in sight.

Nygaard held the lead over the final lap, with Swenson settling for the runner-up slot. Rookie shoe Roberts posted a strong third-place finish, with Mike Boston racing from 14th to snare fourth. Gregg Bakker charged from 16th to round out the top five, with 16-year-old Jack Dover, Eric Lutz, Rick Ideus, Curt Lund and Dean Chadd completing the top ten.

Gullion, Russell, Roberts and Swenson topped heat race action for the 37-car field, with Jeff Griffis and Bakker splitting victory honors in the twin "B" Mains.

Rob Danielsen flipped in the fourth heat, with Natalie Sather getting upside down on the opening lap of the second "B" Main. There were no injuries.
