Nygaard Nets First ASCS Win in Regional Clash at Crawford County
DENISON, Iowa (July 21, 2006) -- North Dakota's Wade Nygaard isn't exactly a stranger to victory lane. But until Friday night's 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Northern Plains vs. Midwest Regional clash at Crawford County Speedway, ASCS victory lane had eluded him.
Nygaard changed that though, taking advantage of lapped traffic on the 19th round to snare the lead from Jake Peters en route to capturing his first career ASCS triumph aboard the Weseman-powered Auto Finance Super Center/North Star Telecom No. 9 Schnee.
"I knew I wasn't going to be able to catch Jake unless we hit lapped traffic," Nygaard explained afterward. "My crew, Billy Matejcek and Ward Henderson, changed tire pressure and a couple other little things on that red flag and got the car a lot better."
Nygaard started the feature from the front row outside, but it was polesitter Peters jumping into the early lead as a pair of incidents interrupted the early pace.
The red flag first flew after five laps when Chad Humston, who entered the night atop ASCS Midwest Region points, took a wild ride down the backstretch after a broken wheel sent him into the turn two wall. Humston was uninjured.
Two laps later, moments after battling past Natalie Sather for fourth, Gregg Bakker broke a wheel and came to a stop in turn three, precipitating a caution.
Back under way, Peters led the way in front of Nygaard, Jason Danley, Sather and Brian Brown. Brown wasted little time advancing racing past Sather and Danley to take over third in little more than a lap.
Meanwhile, Peters escaped to a half straightaway advantage by the time lapped traffic came into play at the halfway point. Nygaard closed the gap in short order, moving in on Peters by the 16th circuit.
Nygaard made the winning move in turn two on the 19th round and charged to the checkered flag unchallenged. Brown briefly passed Peters for second with just two laps remaining, but Peters fought back to retain the runner-up slot.
Brown settled for the show position in front of Joe Beaver, with 18-year-old Lee Grosz slicing through the field from his 20th starting position to round out the top five.
Danley crossed the stripe sixth, with Toby Chapman, Curt Lund, current ASCS Northern Plains Region point leader Chuck Swenson and Bill Boles completing the top ten.
Nygaard, Danley and Sather topped heat race action, with Swenson winning the 12-lap "B" Main.
