J.D. Johnson Strikes for ASCS Midwest Loot at Belleville
BELLEVILLE, Kan. (July 27, 2006) -- J.D. Johnson scored his first career American Sprint Car Series feature win in impressive fashion by wiring the field in Thursday night's 20-lap ASCS Midwest Region vs. NCRA feature atop the famed Belleville High Banks.
The Goddard, KS, racer gunned into the lead at the outset and paced the field throughout, fending off a late bid from Garry Lee Maier to secure the win aboard Bill Johnson's Briley Racing Engines/Evans Building Co. 98 Maxim.
"My car was great tonight, my crew did an awesome job and it's great to get an ASCS feature win," the happy winner exclaimed from victory lane.
Johnson and Maier led the 24-car feature field to the green flag, with Johnson jumping into the early lead as the pair raced away from Jake Martens, Toby Chapman and Jon Corbin.
Johnson slipped away from Maier in the early rounds until heavy lapped traffic came into play past the midway point. Maier closed the gap and was on Johnson's rear nerf bar as the white flag flew. Johnson was up to the challenge however and held on to take the win by two car-lengths over Maier.
Chapman battled past Martens for third on the 12th circuit, but already a straightaway behind the lead pair was unable to join the lead battle.JChapman settled for a strong third-place showing and took over the ASCS Midwest Region point lead in the process, with Martens and Corbin rounding out the top five.
Defending ASCS Midwest Region champion Billy Alley crossed the stripe sixth, with Don Droud, Jr., Sam Hafertepe, Jr., defending ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion Gary Taylor and Steven King completing the top ten.
Johnson, Maier, Chapman and Chris Morgan topped heat race action for the 32-car field, with Hafertepe and Taylor splitting victory honors in the twin "B" Mains.
Entering the night atop ASCS Midwest Region points, 16-year-old Jack Dover missed the feature cut after a "B" Feature incident on the backstretch that resulted in a bent wheel and Jacob's ladder.
