Johnson Takes Top Billing in ASCS Regional Showdown at Texarkana
TEXARKANA, Ark. (May 12, 2006) -- It was "Theason & Jason Show" in Friday night's American Sprint Car Series Gulf South vs. Mid-South Region Showdown at 67 Texarkana Speedway, withason Johnson taking quick advantage of a late Jason Sides miscue to snare victory honors in the 25-lap main event.
Sides led from the outset and almost had his first ASCS triumph since 1996 within his grasp until nearly slipping off the turn four banking on the 23rd lap, opening the door for Johnson to streak into the lead and take his third consecutive ASCS Gulf South Region feature win.
Sides and Johnson gridded the feature field on the front row, with Sides gunning into the lead at the drop of the green flag. And after a pair of cautions in the opening three rounds, the final 22 circuits ran in non-stop fashion with the pair dicing for the point much of the way.
Sides opened up an eight car-length edge in the early stages, as Darren Stewart held off Gary Wright and Travis Rilat for third. But when lapped traffic came into play on the eleventh round, Johnson began cutting into Sides' advantage. ohnson closed to Sides' rear nerf bar by the 15th lap and pulled alongside several times over the next few laps as the pair sliced through heavy traffic. Sides fought off each bid however, and began to slip away again with clear track ahead.
But the perilously narrow cushion in turns three and four proved to be Sides' ultimate demise, as he nearly slipped over the banking with little more than two laps to go. Johnson dove to the low side and streaked by in the Wesmar-powered The Shop Diesel Service/Custom Equipment Design No. 41 Eagle. ohnson raced underneath the checkered flag with a pair of lapped cars between himself and Sides, who recovered in time to hold on to the runner-up position. Wright battled past Stewart at the race's midway point to claim the show position, with Stewart and Rilat rounding out the top five. ohnny Miller crossed the stripe sixth, with Dale Howard, Justin Sturch, Greg Rilat and Skip Wilson completing the top ten.
Tim Crawley, Johnson, Wright and Sides topped heat race action for the 34-car field. Chris Sweeney made a late move past Stephen Chevallier to win the first 12-lap "B" Main, with Lane Whittington wiring the field in the second "B" Main.
