TULSA, Okla. (September 8, 2003) - The stars of the O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers are set to square off with the competitive Memphis area regulars this coming weekend as the series makes its final stops of the season at Memphis Motorsports Park on Friday night and Riverside Speedway in West Memphis on Saturday night.
With each of his three top challengers suffering setbacks this past weekend in Arkansas, Travis Rilat posted a pair of third place finishes to extend his series point lead to 46 markers over Gary Wright.
>From Forney, TX, Rilat has posted five O'Reilly ASCS National Tour triumphs this season, including one at Memphis Motorsports Park on April 26. Rilat has recorded 23 top-five finishes and 31 top-tens in 35 events this season.
Wright, from Hooks, TX, had closed to within 14 points of Rilat before being collected in an accident this past Friday night at Batesville. Wright has made the most trips to victory lane in O'Reilly ASCS action this year, notching 14 feature wins, including a sweep of MMP and Riverside during the series last swing through Memphis on July 18-19.
Zach Chappell of Talala, OK, is third in points, 60 points off the pace, with Darren Stewart of Bixby, OK, 96 points out of the lead. Both drivers suffered DNF's this past Saturday night at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway.
While Rilat, Wright, Chappell and Stewart continue their championship points battle with just eight nights of racing remaining, a number of other top drivers will be shooting for victory lane this coming weekend, including ASCS shoes Cody Branchcomb, Toby Brown, Jimmy Taylor and three-time series champion Tim Crawley.
A number of Memphis-area regulars will attempt to defend their home turf, including Eddie Gallagher (winner of the May 31 ASCS Speedweek event at Riverside Speedway), Paul Sides, who is engaged in a tight points battle with Gallagher at MMP, current Riverside Speedway point leader Marshall Skinner, Mike Ward, Raymond Stull, Ernie Ainsworth, D.J. Masner, Dale Howard and Jan Howard.
Friday's action atop Memphis Motorsports Park's quarter-mile gumbo oval gets under way at 8:00 p.m. Memphis Motorsports Park is located off I-40 Exit 6, then 5.4 miles north on Warford, then left for 0.9 miles on Raleigh-Millington, then 0.6 miles west on Fite Road, then north.
