O'Reilly ASCS Ready for MMP Double Dip

TULSA, Okla. (April 18, 2005) -- After several idle weekends, the stars of the O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores fire back into action as the traveling troops take to the quarter-mile Memphis Motorsports Park gumbo clay oval this Friday and Saturday night.

Defending series champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, who is just ten victory drives away from his 100th career ASCS National Tour triumph, will try to shake off the effects of a sub-par (at least by Gary Wright standards) Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals that included finishes of seventh and eighth.

Wright enters the weekend ranked fifth in points, while 2003 ASCS National champion Travis Rilat enters the Memphis double ranked just 16th after a disastrous Spring Nationals. Looking to reverse his fortunes, Rilat picked up an ASCS Gulf South Region triumph this past weekend in Beaumont, TX.

Among those joining the past two series champions will be O'Reilly ASCS championship contenders Darren Stewart, who broke into Little Rock's victory lane this past weekend, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Jimmy Taylor and Toby Brown, who has competed in 200 consecutive ASCS National Tour events.

Several Memphis-area drivers are also vying for the ASCS title in 2005 including Byhalia, MS, shoe Jan Howard, 2004 Brodix Rookie of the Year A.G. Rains of West Memphis, AR, and 2005 Rookie candidate Lee Sowell of Nesbit, MS.

Sowell is joined in the National Tour Brodix Rookie of the Year chase by Jake Martens of Fairview, OK, and Liberal, KS, shoe Tony Bruce, Jr., who enters the weekend ranked second in points after strong finishes of second and fifth in the Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals on March 18-19.

The traveling guns of the O'Reilly ASCS will be challenged by a stout group of Memphis-area regulars, including Eddie Gallagher, Mike Ward, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Ernie Ainsworth and Dale Howard, who raced to victory lane at MMP last Friday.

Close to 40 entries are expected for both night's of racing action.

Friday's racing is set to get under way at 8:00 p.m., with Saturday's card going green at 7:00 p.m.

Memphis Motorsports Park is located off I-40 Exit 6, then 5.4 miles north on Warford, then left for 0.9 miles on Raleigh-Millington. For more information, contact the track at 901-358-7223.
