Rilat Tops O'Reilly ASCS Tech Prelim

LUBBOCK, Tex. (May 21, 2004) - Travis Rilat continued his winning ways in American Sprint Car Series competition Friday night at Tech Motor Speedway, charging past Gary Wright on the fifth round en route to topping the 20-lap O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers preliminary feature.

The defending series champion moved atop the series 2004 points with his second consecutive ASCS National Tour triumph and his fourth ASCS triumph in a row including Regional victories.

"The car was really hooked up tonight and we were going as about good as it gets," commented Rilat from victory lane after taking the checkered flag with a half-lap advantage. "We've got our program going really well, hopefully we can keep it going this way."

While Rilat started the main event from the front row outside position, it was polesitter Wright, who earned the spot by charging from eighth to win the evening's third heat race, who jumped into the early lead following three aborted starts for minor tangles.

Wright set the pace for four rounds with Rilat in pursuit until sliding high in turns one and two to avoid George White, who was searching for an exit with a flat left front tire. Rilat took advantage of Wright's slide and charged into the lead for good.

Wright stayed within contention as lapped traffic came into play on the seventh round, when the red flag flew after Lubbock native and Sooner Region rookie contender Preston Peebles II looped his machine in turn four and was tagged head-on by a wide-open Rick Behr. After a rough flip, Behr emerged from his destroyed mount shaken but otherwise uninjured, with Peebles walking away without injury as well.

Rilat set sail in the Motor Mike-powered F&J Construction/Haulmark Trailers No. 29 Maxim over the final 14 non-stop rounds, slicing through lapped traffic with ease and taking the checkered flag with a half-lap advantage over his rivals.

Jason Martin, who blasted from his original seventh starting position into third by the second round, overtook Wright for the runner-up slot on the eighth lap then held off a handful of challengers to secure the position at the stripe. Wright claimed the show position, with Shane Stewart snaring the fourth and final transfer position to Saturday night's main event.

After starting 12th, Zach Chappell made a last lap pass of tenth-starter Garry Lee Maier to round out the top five, .014-seconds ahead of Maier. Bud Goodwin claimed seventh, while Darren Stewart utilized a provisional starting position after a heat race flip to charge from 21st to eighth. Chuck Swenson crossed the stripe in ninth, with Kolt Walker completing the top ten in his ASCS debut.

Scott Box, White, Wright and Shane Stewart topped heat race action for the 31-car field, with Toby Brown fending off Tony Bruce, Jr., to win the 12-lap B Main. Robert Gomez made a valiant last corner effort to snare the fourth and final transfer position from Behr in the B Main, only to tag the wall and flip on the frontstretch. Gomez was uninjured.
