JONES SCORES POPULAR CAREER FIRST SPRINT WIN AT LINCOLN; Danny Jones scores first career super sprint win! ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/1/98 - "This is awesome!" That's how Hanover's Danny Jones reacted after scoring his first career super sprint win in the 25-lap feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. "It's been a long time coming," said Jones in victory lane. "When he found out Fred Rahmer finished second...that makes it even better!" Jones credited car owner Jeff Creasy and new crew chief Kirk Dewease for his marked improvement over the past four weeks. "I thought I knew how these cars were supposed to run, but Kirk has really shown us some things." Mike Lutz put the Bill and Kay Tanger sprinter into the lead at the start, only to have the red flag fly just as the leaders were finishing the second lap. Dan Dietrich flipped his car and the ensuing tangle involved a total of eight cars, including 13-time winner Fred Rahmer. Rahmer, still feeling the effects of a bone-jarring crash at Lernerville Speedway earlier in the week, was forced to the back one-third of the field for the restart. Dietrich was uninjured, but his car and Shawn Weaver's were done for the night. Lutz took off on the restart and pulled out to a 1.5 second lead over Tim Kuhn and Danny Jones. Jones got past Kuhn for second in the fifth lap. As Kuhn tried to get back by Jones, he spun in turn two, bringing out the yellow and ending Kuhn's night. Jones made a pass for the lead on the backstretch after the restart, only to give it back due to a spin by Neil Amspacker in turn two. On the next restart, Jones made the pass just after the cone as Lutz slipped over the cushion in turn four. Jones opened up a 1.39 second lead over Lutz, Dave Ely, Steve Siegel and Cris Eash. Rahmer, who originally started 19th because of a crash in his heat race, had made steady work through the field, moving to sixth when the yellow flew for Tom Howe, who stalled in turn three of lap 11. Lutz tried to get past Jones on the restart and the two raced side by side for all of the 12th lap, but Jones held on and quickly opened up a 1.17 second lead. Meanwhile, Rahmer continued his march to the front moving past Eash and Siegel to take fourth on lap 13. Back at the front, Jones was taking full advantage of all the fighting for position behind him, stretching his lead to 2.5 seconds by lap 16, the lap on which Rahmer first grabbed third from Dave Ely. But Ely fought back, and the two fought for three laps before the defending track champ secured the spot on lap 20. Jones' maintained his lead on lap 22 as Rahmer moved to the bottom for his last pass on the night, getting Lutz in turn two. But Rahmer ran out of time, with Jones taking the checkered flag 2.3 seconds ahead. Lutz finished third, with Ely and Siegel completing the top five. Cris Eash was sixth, with Bill Brian Jr., Dave Haight, Johnny Mackison Jr. and Darren Eash rounded out the top ten. Heats for the 23 super sprints were won by Weaver and Todd Gracey. _________________________________________________________________ Greg Leiby Greg Leiby came from the back to the front in scoring his first win of the year in the 20-lap "358" sprint feature. Leiby was scheduled to start tenth, but forgot to turn the fuel valve off after his heat and flooded the motor at feature time. A second push forced him to the rear for the start of the feature. Leiby's run to the front appeared to be over when he got to second. But he inherited the lead when Mike Lehman's right front wheel came off on a last lap restart. Leiby wasn't the only driver to come the whole way through the field. James Chesson came from 19th to finish second, while Dave Gable came from 22nd to take third. Todd Reed and Bob Hagen rounded out the top five. The team cars of Cris Eash and Tom Leach, Mark Richard, and Terry Leininger were among the big guns caught up in a six-car tangle on the first and second turns of lap two. Leininger actually spun twice in the feature (the second time on turn four of lap 13), but came back to finish seventh. 358 Sprint heats were won by Mike Rabold, Hagan, Ron Kramer and Eash. Richard and Leininger each won a consolation event. _________________________________________________________________ LINCOLN SPEEDWAY RACE RESULTS SATURDAY - AUGUST 1, 1998 SUPER SPRINTS Feature (25 Laps) - 1. 8J-Danny Jones ($2,500); 2. 77-Fred Rahmer; 3. 07-Mike Lutz; 4. 77E-Dave Ely; 5. 59-Steve Siegel; 6. 17E-Cris Eash; 7. 16-Bill Brian Jr.; 8. 10N-Dave Haight; 9. 65-Johnny Mackison Jr.; 10. 7E-Darren Eash; 11. 32-Brook Weibley; 12. 8D-Billy Dietrich; 13. 94-Glendon Forsythe; 14. 3H-Kevin Higgins; 15. 29T-Neil Amspacker (DNF); 16. 25-Todd Gracey (DNF); 17. 43-Larry Shive (DNF); 18. 3-Tom Howe (DNF); 19. 2$-Tim Kuhn (DNF); 20. 03-Jeff Miller (DNF); 21. 2W-Jesse Wentz (DNF); 22. 69-Shawn Weaver (DNF); 23. 8-Dan Dietrich (DNF).
