ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 9/9/00 - Darren Eash ended a dry spell dating back to June 3rd in claiming his second win of the year in the 358 sprint championship at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. Eash benefited from good luck for a change, started on the outside of the front row, and led wire to wire in the 25-lap, $1,000-to-win championship event. "Every race we've finished this year we've been in the top three," said a happy Eash in victory lane. "We fell out of a couple events because of my fault and a couple because of the car's fault. But this crew, the sponsors, the car owners...I've never had more fun racing than I'm having right now." Though he led every lap, the Patton Tire #71 of Joe Whitcomb was on his back bumper most of the way. Whitcomb would lose ground to Eash on restarts, but reel the leader back in between cautions. Whitcomb finished a strong second, followed by Doug Esh, who wrapped up the 2000 Lincoln 358 sprint title with his third-place run. "I thought the whole race that was Doug running me," Eash said, "It was the No.71 car...his guy Bug Kessler used to help me and he went down and starting helping them, and Joe got more confidence. I'm really happy for them. Last time here they didn't qualify. But to run second against this car is saying something." "Congratulations to Doug (Esh) and his crew for the track championship," Eash added. "The kid's a heck of a driver...the 410 guys should pick up on him and put him out here because he's on the gas pedal. At first I thought this guy was lucky. He races so hard and gets away with it all the time. Luck only lasts so long, and if you keep running and don't crash, something must be there." "This is an awesome team, said head mechanic Butch Hoover. "We couldn't buy a win there for a while...this is the fastest car on the East Coast...I guarantee it!" "It was tough getting here, we've had a little bad luck here lately," said car-owner Dick Leach. "But we've got it back now...there's a lot of really good racers out here and Doug Esh, he's a really hard racer. It's fun to win against him. He had some bad luck there tonight, but Darren got the job done and that's all we're looking for." "My hats off to the team," said the newly crowned 358 sprint champion Doug Esh. "We struggled a little bit tonight. Hoover said their car is the fastest car in the East. I might tend to disagree, but tonight he was good and we just were not real good but we just wanted to pad the points lead and wrap the title up." Chad Layton came from his 11th starting spot to cross fourth, with Dan Dietrich completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were T.J. Stutts, Joe Ilg, Bob Camilli (who started 18th), Scott Ausherman (who started 20th and drove the Amspacher #29T car), and Billy Johns. 358 sprint heats were won by Eash, Stutts, Camilli, and Whitcomb. Twin consolations were won by Dan Dietrich and Ilg. Adrian Shaffer of York set fast time in time trials over the 42-car field with a one-lap time of 14.598 seconds (92.478 mph), then tipped onto his side in the first-lap crash that saw Eric Stambaugh drop from the field after starting on the front row and give the outside pole to Eash.
Spring Grove's Brian Leppo also benefited from some good luck in becoming the third different driver to win in as many races in the 15-lap micro-sprint feature. Leppo started on the outside of the front row and led every lap, although 11th-starting Jimmy Brookens took the lead on lap 13 as a red flag was coming out for Chris Webb, who smacked together with his brother Pat in the first two turns. Leppo assumed the race lead for the restart and held off Brookens for the win, with Mike Bittinger third, Butch Harrington fourth, and Shawn Seifert crossing fifth. Heats for the 41 micro sprints on hand were won by Jim Lender, Brookens, Seifert, and Jeff Young. Twin consolations were won by Brianne Conrath and Chad Trout.
Neil Smith started eighth, moved to third by the end of the first lap, grabbed the lead from early-race leader Jeremy Brown on lap three, and stormed to his division-leading sixth win of the year in the 15-lap thundercar feature. Smith's win was the first back-to-back victory in 22 races this season, and it was the 23rd of his career in the Pigeon Hills, putting him just three wins away from Jeremy Miller for second on the all-time Lincoln win list. Mike Zeigler hounded Smith over the final 11 laps to finish second, with David Prunkl third, Nat Tuckey fourth, and Steve Clabaugh fifth. Heats for the 31 thundercars on hand were won by Bobby Rudisill, Mike Zeigler Jr., and Brown, with Sean Herrick winning the consolation.
Next Saturday night, September 16th, it will be MANUFACTURER'S APPRECIATION NIGHT for the super sprints with thousands of dollars in racing equipment and contingencies being given away to the starting feature field. The super sprinters will be joined by the thundercars in the two-division show. Gates will open at 5 PM, with racing action getting underway at 7:30 PM.
