ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 9/25/99 - Since coming to Central Pennsylvania, Greg Hodnett has been able to win at just about every local tracks except one - Lincoln Speedway. But that all changed Saturday night as Hodnett blasted from his outside frontrow starting spot to grab the lead from polesitter Keith Kauffman at the drop of the green and then led every lap of the special 25-lap Manufacturers Appreciation Night super sprint feature. The win marked the Memphis, TN, driver's first career win at the Pigeon Hills oval.

"We've had a tough year here," said Hodnett with a smile in victory lane. "We've really struggled here and we're really fortunate to win tonight. This has not been my favorite track what-so-ever. Not because of the race track. It's because I haven't done well. So hopefully we have the monkey off our back. We could have been faster...but we'll take it."

But it was with a heavy heart that Hodnett drove this night, as he steered the Apple Chevrolet/Cars by Dealers Magazine No.12 sprinter to victory in a night that was filled with thoughts and prayers for local racing sensation Kevin Gobrecht, who had lost his life in a racing accident the night before.

"He (Lee Stauffer) was really pumped up for this all day," said Hodnett solemnly, "The last win that this car had here was when Kevin (Gobrecht) drove it in meant a lot to us and to Kevin's family. I'll tell you what, we really feel for them. It's just terrible. You can't put into words how bad we feel for them guys right now, and I just pray to god to give them strength to make it through this."

Before the start of the 25-lap super sprint feature, the drivers honored their fallen comrade by placing a letter "G" on the top wing of every car. They then did an honorary parade lap with the pole position empty in Gobrecht's honor.

Hodnett burst into the lead at the drop of the green with Kauffman and Todd Shaffer in tow at the end of the first lap. The caution flag was then waved for debris in the fourth turn on the second lap. On the restart, Niki Young flipped violently up against the third and fourth turn wall and collected Dave Haight and Chris Knopp in the process. All the of the drivers walked away.

Hodnett held off Kauffman on the restart and led the second lap when the caution flag waved for Dan Dietrich on the third lap after spinning out in the first and second turns. Again Hodnett maintained the top spot on the restart, as Shaffer swept around Kauffman in the third and fourth turn of the third lap to move into second. The race was slowed yet another time, as 1999 Lincoln Speedway Super Sprint Champion Fred Rahmer brought his sprinter to a halt on the exit of the fourth turn on the fourth lap.

On the restart, Shaffer pressured Hodnett for the lead, but was able to hold off Shaffer's initial challenges and began to pull away from the Millerstown speedster before the race's final caution flag waved on the 10th lap when Randy Wolfe brought his sprinter to a stop on the backstretch.

On the restart, Hodnett pulled away from Shaffer as Dave Ely passed Kauffman for third place. From there, Hodnett worked through lapped traffic masterfully to take the checkered .84 seconds ahead of Shaffer for his second win in as many nights. The win, Hodnett's 11th overall in 1999, was worth $2,500.

Ely earned a hard-fought third place over Kauffman in fourth and Cris Eash in fifth. Completing the top-10 were Lance Dewease, Steve Siegel, Jesse Wentz, Johnny Mackison Jr. and Len Thompson.

Heats for the 42 super sprint on hand were won by Dietrich, Shaffer, P.J. Chesson and Kauffman. P.J. Chesson won the special two-lap Dash Match Races, with Rahmer establishing a two-lap track record of 27.47 seconds. Twin consolations were won by Dewease and Jesse Wentz.

Second generation driver Mike Zeigler, Jr. scored his first career feature win in the thundercar division, holding off Mike Potts and Bob Scott, Jr. over the final laps for the win. Potts and Scott completed the top three, with Neil Smith and Bobby Rudisill completing the top five. Bobby Beard's 15th place finish as one better than Mike Zeigler's, enough to wrap up the 1999 thundercar points title with one points race remaining.

Thundercar heats were won by David Prunkl, Rudisill and Zeigler Jr., with Steve Clabaugh winning the consolation.

Richmond, VA's Rick Utsman made his first Lincoln visit worthwhile, winning a three-car battle over Kevin Welsh and Travis Dillman in the 15-lap INEX Legends feature. Dillman led the first five laps before yielding to the victor. Utsman has raced all over the East coast, including the famous Charlotte Speedway. Harry Garver and Mike Burrell completed the top five.

Heats for the INEX Legends were won by Dillman, Ray Scigowski and Welch, with Jarod Wintermyer winning the consolation.
