MONTIETH MAKES GOOD ON DAD'S PREDICTION, WINS SECOND OF CAREER; Eash again in "358" sprints; Zeigler claims thundercar main
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/7/99 - Before the night's racing action even got underway, a driver's father made a prophetic statement - "Pencil us in for the win tonight, if not, by next week for sure."
Brian Montieth's father didn't have to wait until next week.
Montieth started outside the front row and grabbed the lead from polesitter Todd Gracey heading down the backstretch at the drop of the green. He went on to lead the 25-lap super sprint feature the rest of the way to pick up his first win of 1999. Despite leading every lap, the Phoenixville racer had to hold-off nine-time Lincoln Speedway winner Fred Rahmer in a final four-lap dash to take checkered .91 seconds ahead of the defending champion for his second career win.
"We got lucky," Montieth said upon exiting his sprint car in victory lane, "We've been running good for a couple weeks but had some bad luck...but I can't complain now! Thanks to Lonnie Ryan, we've been running good...it's his motor in the car. A lot of credit goes to him."
Montieth withstood the early challenges of Gracey and was able to open up a 1.76 second lead over the recovered Brodbeck's racer by the fifth lap. At the time, Jesse Wentz, Dave Ely and Steve Siegel were running third through fifth. Montieth kept widening the gap as they raced through heavy lapped traffic, and held a 2.33 second advantage by the 10th lap. Montieth was lapping cars at will when the race's first of two cautions waved on the 15th lap for Larry Shive, who stopped on the backstretch.
On the restart, Gracey made his most serious challenge for the lead by ducking under Montieth in the first and second turn - only to have Montieth pull even heading down the backstretch and regaining the lead in the third and fourth turns.
Meanwhile, Rahmer was making his customary charge to the front. He passed Ely for fourth on the 16th lap, then by Wentz for third on the 17th lap. Montieth keeping charging ahead, and opened up another huge 2.35 second lead over Gracey and Rahmer as they entered lapped traffic on the 20th lap.
But just when it looked like easy sailing the rest of the way for Montieth's win, the caution flag waved for a final time on the 22nd lap when Bill Brian Jr. and Johnny Mackison Jr. tangled on the frontstretch, with both coming to a stop against the inside guardrail.
Rahmer slipped past Gracey in the third and fourth turns on the restart, and set his sights on Montieth, who opened up a .72 second lead with three laps to go. But Montieth was up to the challenge, and kept his sprint out front the rest of the way to take the checkered .91 seconds ahead of Rahmer in the end.
Gracey settled for third, with Wentz following in fourth and Ely fifth. Completing the top 10 were Cris Eash, Steve Siegel, Donnie Kreitz Jr., Danny Jones and Chris Knopp.
Heats for the 27 super sprints on hand were won by Wentz, Gracey and Eash, with Billy Sims winning the consolation.
Cris Eash won his sixth race in eight '99 Lincoln appearances in the 20-lap "358" sprint feature. Eash started 12th, entered the top five on lap nine, and caught leader Doug Esh as the two raced through heavy lapped traffic on the frontstretch of the next-to-last lap. Esh pulled even with Eash on the backstretch of the final lap, but he was forced low by lapped traffic and Eash rode the cushion to the win. It was Eash's third straight "358" win at Lincoln.
Elmer Stoltzfus led the first seven laps from his pole position before ninth-place starter Joe Ilg took over the top spot and led through lap 15. Esh, who started tenth, wrestled the lead from Ilg on lap 16 and desperately tried to hold off the charge of Eash over the final laps. But Eash closed in on each turn and finally made the pass on with a lap to go.
Eric Stambaugh started fifth, dropped out of the top ten early, then came roaring back over the final 12 laps to claim third, with Ilg holding on for fourth and Tim Hershey finishing fifth.
Heats for the 31 "358" limited sprints on hand were won by Tracy Templin, Stoltzfus and Esh, with Kevin Drury winning the consolation.
Mike Zeigler won for the first time since opening day (2/20) in the 15-lap thundercar feature. He started eighth, advanced to fourth by the end of the second lap, and took the lead from Duane Watson entering the third turn of lap seven. Watson followed Mike Walls for the first five laps before leading lap six. Watson dogged Zeigler the rest of the way, but couldn't return the favor and finished second. Bernie Beard came back from an 11-car melee on the fifth lap to cross third, with Steve Clabaugh fourth and Fred Cullum fifth.
In 23 features to date, no driver has been able to claim more than three wins on the year.
Heats for the 31 thundercars on hand were won by Watson, Walls and Bob Scott Jr., with Mike Zeigler Jr. winning the consolation.
