MARYLANDERS SWEEP LINCOLN 358 SPRINT, LATE MODEL, THUNDERCAR FEATURES
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/3/99 - It was a different driver with the same last name, and it was in the same 358 sprint team. And the result was the same - another win.
Ijamsville, Maryland racer Darren Eash filled in for brother Cris (who was racing at Port Royal in Pennsylvania Speedweek action) and made him proud by bringing home yet another win for the Leach Racing 358 Sprint Team. Eash, who started sixth, chased-down polesitter and race-long leader Eric Patteson for the lead on the fifth lap, then cruised the rest of the way to pick up his first win in 1999 in the 20-lap 358 Sprint feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. And with the win, the Leach team claimed its fourth win in six races in the Pigeon Hills this year.
Eash took the checkered .47 seconds over Terry Leininger, who started 13th and battled defending track champion Greg Leiby for the runner-up spot over the second half of the race. Leininger won the battle for second, with Leiby crossing third. Doug Esh (who started 10th) and Tracy Templin finished fourth and fifth respectively. Rounding out the top 10 were Mark Richard, Joe Ilg, Billy Dietrich, Mike Lehman and Bob Fisher.
358 heats were won by Patteson, Leiby, Esh and Joe Whitcomb. Twin consolations were won by Ilg and Bob Hagan.
Glen Bernie, Maryland’s Jerry Foster followed up his Friday night Potomac Speedway win with a dominating performance in the 20-lap late model feature, the first late model race run at Lincoln in six years. Foster started sixth and led all 20 laps. Foster’s margin of victory over Lebanon’s Jim Bernheisel was 2.46 seconds. Despite the impressive run, Foster was using a relatively small engine that pumped out at 354 cubic inches at Potomac the night before. Harold Dorsey started third and finished third, polesitter Gov Yearick finished fourth and Bill Timme started and finished fifth. Completing the top 10 were Rick Hulson, Bernie Beard, Jere Weirman, Mike Lupfer and Paul Eveler.
Late model heats were won by Foster, Bernheisel and Ray Kable Jr. Kable’s heat win established the first-ever eight-lap track record for the late models with a time of two minutes, 20.40 seconds. Randy Croop won the consolation.
Sykesville’s David Prunkl completed a Maryland sweep in the 15-lap thundercar feature, becoming the 12th driver in 19 thundercar events at Lincoln in 1999. It was his first career Lincoln win. For the second week in a row, several multi-car crashes forced points leaders to come from the rear and fight for every spot. Duane Watson dogged Prunkl the entire race, finishing .38 seconds behind the winner. K.T. Shaw, Neil Smith, and Bob Scott, Jr. completed the top five.
Thundercar heats were won by Watson, Bernie Beard and Prunkl. Matt Barnes won the consolation.
Next weekend, Saturday July 10th, Lincoln Speedway will have all three regular divisions back in action - the super sprints, 358 sprints, and thundercars - plus a kids big wheel race. Racing action gets underway at 7:30 PM, with gates opening at 5 PM.
