RAHMER PULLS EVEN WITH THE LATE KENNY WELD ON LINCOLN CAREER WIN LIST;

Michael edges Rahmer in thrilling URC feature ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/8/98 -Salfordville's Fred Rahmer just keeps rolling along at Lincoln Speedway. Fast Freddy prepared for next week's Knoxville Nationals by picking up his 14th of the year in the Pigeon Hills Saturday night, moving him into a third-place tie with the late Kenny Weld on Lincoln's all-time win list. "Like I've said before...just to be mentioned with them guys is quite an honor," said Rahmer in victory lane, "I know the true deal, and they were way better racers than I'll ever be...but I try every week and here we are." "Hopefully we can go out there and represent Pennsylvania well at Knoxville next week," said Rahmer on heading for the Knoxville Nationals in Knoxville, IA, next weekend, "I'm proud as hell of the guys in Pennsylvania...we did real well with the Outlaws. We're going out to Knoxville...none of us have much time out there, but we'll go out and do our best. We have the stuff to do it. If we have a good night we could be there (victory lane)." Rahmer Interview "Hopefully we can go out there and represent Pennsylvania well at Knoxville next week..." "We'll miss next Saturday night here at Lincoln, and I hate to do it because I love racing here. But that's a big race and we can go out and see how good we are." Car-owner Al Hamilton praised Lincoln promoters for suspending super sprint points for a week, allowing the Pennsylvania drivers to drive in next week's Nationals. Although next week's race will not carry points, Lincoln promoters have decided to increase next week's winner's share to $3,000. Rahmer, who started 11th, had to fight hard to get through the field and chased down race-leader Todd Gracey on the 20th lap. He made his patented move under the Brodbecks speedster in the third and fourth turns to take the lead and then streaked away to his nation-leading 26th win of 1998. "I couldn't get clear of them guys," said Rahmer on getting through from his 11th starting position. "I saw on the 15th lap, when we had the yellow, there was quite a few lapped cars between us and Todd. He's a good racer and I thought if I don't get some of these guys real quick he was going to be gone. But once I got free I could really run hard and the car was really good." "I'm pretty good tonight," said Rahmer on his recovery from a crash last week that landed him in a Pittsburgh area hospital for a few nights. "I'm a little woozy in the morning...but we were pretty good tonight." The outset of the feature saw polesitter Mike Lutz grab the point over outside frontrow starter Gracey and lead the first three laps. Gracey then took advantage of a fourth lap caution restart to grab the lead in the first and second turns and quickly pulled away. Rahmer, after having a hard time working through the field at the start of the feature, moved into the top five on the 11th lap after passing last week's first-time feature winner Danny Jones. He then moved past Johnny Mackison Jr. for fourth on the 13th lap, then by Brian Montieth for third following a 16th lap caution restart, and then by Lutz into the runner-up spot on the 18th lap while Gracey enjoyed a 1.35 second lead. But Rahmer quickly ran down Gracey the next lap to make his winning move. Lutz rebounded to takes second, 4.82 seconds behind, with Mackison, Gracey, and Steve Siegel completing the top five. Completing the top 10 were Jones, Cris Eash, Dave Ely, Bill Brian Jr., and Jesse Wentz. Sprint heats were won by Mike Lutz, Johnny Mackison Jr., and Steve Siegel. Darren Eash won the consolation event. _________________________________________________________________ Rahmer was also a factor in the United Racing Club's first feature at Lincoln in 13 years. But it was Curt Michael who held off Fred Rahmer over the closing laps to score the win. The crowd jumped to its feet when Rahmer tried to slide under Michael and the two made contact exiting the fourth turn on a 23rd lap restart. In fact, the cars locked momentarily, with Michael bouncing off the outside wall and both drivers doing wheelies down the front stretch. "I knew where he was going to go, but I wasn't backing out. I've had this race marked on my calendar all year. This was the one I wanted." Rahmer started 18th and climbed to third by the eighth lap. He followed Michael and points leader Kramer Williamson until lap 22, when he slipped under Williamson for the runner-up spot in the second turn. Williamson looked to return the favor when he jumped the cushion and turned onto his side in turns three and four. That set up the wild restart. Michael held off Rahmer again on a 25th-lap restart after the caution flew for a spinning Fran Hogue. The final margin of victory was less than two car lengths. Greg Coverdale, Jeremy Trout, and Stew Brown completed the top five. URC heats were won by Tom Capie, Rahmer, and Becca Anderson. Trout won the B-Main.
