GOBRECHT ENDS RAHMER WIN STREAK AT LINCOLN ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/18/98 - How do you beat Fred Rahmer? Just hold on for dear life! That's the way New Oxford's Kevin Gobrecht described it after using a wild three-wide move for the lead on the 11th lap and then holding on the rest of the way to end Rahmer's record-setting 12-race win streak at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. "Three laps after the restart, I was hanging on for dear life and I was really just waiting for Fred or somebody to motor by me," said a jubilant Gobrecht in victory lane, "We got a good run off of four coming down the frontstretch and all I knew was we were three-wide going into one. I wasn't letting off, and I didn't know if they were either. We went for the win." Gobrecht, piloting the John Zemaitis/Zemco Headers #1 sprinter for injured driver Billy Pauch, started seventh and was actually running eighth when a caution flew for Eric Mathiot on lap three. Following a sixth-lap caution, Gobrecht advanced from seventh to fifth by passing Brian Montieth and Shawn Weaver on the backstretch to move into the top five. He caught Todd Gracey for fourth on the eighth lap and drove by a fading Danny Jones on lap ten. On the restart from an 11th lap caution, Gobrecht made his race-winning move, slipping under both Cris Eash and Dan Dietrich as they were racing for the lead entering the first turn. Gobrecht then drifted high across turns one and two, split the two leaders, and actually made contact with the wall as he was exiting turn two. "I'm really surprised...I told the crew this thing gets real loose after three laps. I'm just glad I could hang on to those lapped cars and they didn't disturb me," added Gobrecht, "I was waiting for (Rahmer) to stick his nose under me there in lapped traffic. You can't take anything away from Freddy after winning 12 in-a-row...that's just incredible. We've only got one (win) now and the odds were really stacked up against him to keep it going. I can't say enough about Fred. He races me clean all the time. He's a hell of a racer." Rahmer caught Eash for second on the final lap, but finished 1.23 seconds behind Gobrecht. Following Eash across the line were Steve Siegel and Dietrich, who led the first ten laps. Rounding out the top ten were Gracey, Bill Brian, Jr., Jones, Dave Ely, and Brian Montieth. Gobrecht's win was the fourth of his career in the Pigeon Hills. Heats for the 26 super sprints were won by Shawn Weaver, Gobrecht, and Rahmer. Joey Allen won the consolation.
