Port Royal, PA -- Racer Kyle Ganoe is listed in critical condition as of noon Thursday June 13, 2002 at the Lehigh Valley Hospital's Burn Center in Allentown, PA. Ganoe was seriously injured on lap 7 during the Saturday night June 8 racing program at Port Royal Speedway. Ganoe under went successful skin graft surgery on Wed- nesday June 12. Surgery began shortly before 5 p.m. and lasted over seven hours. Doctors indicated Ganoe's right hand was the most severe injury and termed his burns as deep. They indicated he may have to under go a second operation to his hand at a later time.
Ganoe is on a tracheotomy tube with a ventilator at this time. He remains in a drug induced coma and will be kept in that condition for at least ten more days. Complications have set in from the lung injuries suffered from fire inhalation. Ganoe has developed a touch of pneumonia and has been started on antibiotics. His father indicates he is not yet out of danger from this terrible accident. His vital signs are stable and strong which is good.
Long term prognosis can not be determined at this time. "Kyle has good days and bad," said father Mark Ganoe," he got a little better Tuesday and then went backwards when the pneumonia set in. It's still too early to tell."
The elder Ganoe thanks all for the cards and letters of support. He also thanks and credits the Fire and Ambulance crews for their quick and professional work in attending to his son. Ganoe Sr. also plans to make his sons fire suit and gloves available for racers to see in hopes they will better understand the danger of this type accident and upgrade their own safety equipment. Had Kyle Ganoe's equipment not been the quality it was, it most certainly would have been worse, if not fatal.
