For the entire MSS season, Jimmy Kouba has been one of the strongest, most consistent drivers on the circuit, but had been unable to get a victory. After finishing second in his first two appearances at Kopellah, last Friday night, September 8th, Kouba finally had everything fall into place as he drove to a dominating victory in the final race of the 2000 MSS season. Kouba became the 7th winner in 8 races with the MSS this season. The 20-lap feature saw Roger Rager, the only two-time MSS winner this season, and Jimmy Kouba lead the 14 car field into turn one. Rager jumped out the early lead and then on lap 3, Jimmy powered to the inside and took the advantage as the field crossed the line. The action was slowed on lap 4 when Tom Nicholl hit a tire in turn one and needed to be towed into the infield. The restart line-up would show Jimmy Kouba, Rager, Joe Kouba, Tom Kamrath, and Al Hargrave making up the top 5 spots. On the restart, Jimmy Kouba again jumped out to a large lead and began stretching his advantage over the field. Meanwhile, Raleigh Sandberg, who was making his first MSS appearance this season, was working his way up from the fourth row and had moved into the top 5 by the 10th lap. As the race neared conclusion, Jimmy still had a large lead but Rager and Joe Kouba began racing side-by-side for the second spot. The two exchanged positions and raced hard for several laps before Rager eventually secured the spot. Rager, however, could not catch Jimmy Kouba as the race finished with Rager, Joe Kouba, Tom Kamrath, and Sandberg making up the top 10. In preliminary action, Jimmy Kouba defeated Roger Rager to win the first heat race, Tom Kamrath held off Joe Kouba to take the second heat. The Donahue Sports Center Dash was a wild affair as John Jacob and Roger Rager tangled on the first lap as they headed into turn 3. Jacob was finished, but Rager restarted the 6-lap dash at the tail. Miraculously, in just 6 laps, Rager passed the entire field and narrowly nipped Jimmy Kouba at the finish line to take the win and the pole for the main event. Roger Rager was crowned the 2000 MSS champion as he garnered enough points to defeat Tom and Greg Kamrath for the title. Ehren Layton, who was second in points coming into the last event, was not present and slipped into 4th place in the final standings. John Nelson rounded out the top 5 in his rookie season of racing sprint cars. <pre> RESULTS FROM MSS RACE #8 KOPELLAH SPEEDWAY SEPTEMBER 8th, 2000
