St. Croix Falls, WI - May 24, 2000 - Chilly weather and a pessimistic forecast may have kept some of the crowd and a handful of racers away from Kopellah Speedway in St. Croix Falls, WI Friday night, but nothing could stop Brainerd MN's John Franzen from collecting his first ever sprint car feature win. The third year driver put his 360 sprinter into victory lane on the second stop on the 2000 Midwest Sprintcar Series tour. Franzen and the orange #51of Ehren Layton brought the field down for the green flag and Franzen hauled his #35 out to a healthy lead. Tom Kamrath slipped into second place at the green and followed Franzen for several laps. Meanwhile, the top two finishers from the MSS season opener, Kent Winters and Roger Rager, had elected to start from the tail in an attempt to earn an extra $200. By lap 3, Rager had charged to fifth position and looked to be gaining ground on the leaders, and Winters was not far behind. Franzen had stretched his lead to about 10 car lengths when Al Hargrave spun in turn 3 after dicing three wide with Gene Kelly and Kent Winters for the fifth spot. On the restart, Franzen again drove away from the field as Rager continued his charge through the field. Lap 12, saw the second yellow of the race fly after Tom Kamrath got into the backstretch wall while running in the top 3. It was now Franzen, Rager, Winters, Layton, and Al Hargrave as the field came down to take the green. Franzen jumped back to the high side and continued to lead the veterans Rager and Winters until the checkered flag fell. Hargrave squeezed past Layton for fourth late in the race. Heat races went to Franzen and Winters, and the Cash Dash went to the Donahue Motorsports #6. Kent Winters extended his points lead and now leads Roger Rager by 16 points heading into next weekend's action. The MSS now moves to the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, MN on Friday June 2nd.
